I am all for abolishing DST. I think it's silly and doesn't really make sense. I also live in a province where we don't observer DST for ourselves, but see it for others.

I'm a morning person, I get up around 5am every day to go run and we're just now reaching that time of year where it's starting to get light out when I finish up my run (which is my favorite time of year.) Except next week it will reset again and I'll have to wait a few more weeks until that's the case again. It's stupid.

I have never been a fan of DST. I'm not a morning person. I always hate waking up and waking up an hour earlier is my idea of a bad time. I know there's much worse problems in the world but this one seems like a pretty easy fix. Glad to see some experts agree. What do you think? Should we get rid of this nonsense or am I just big cry baby?

I definitely support abolishing DST. I'm astounded that at some point in history, people decided that we ought to redefine time itself to deal with seasonal daylight.

Really? Daylight was far more important than time of day up until very recently, civilizationally-speaking; essentially until the wide distribution of electric lighting, just over a century ago. Moving time to line up with daylight made far, far more sense than ignoring daylight in favor of time (or just ignoring time outright), since you couldn't ignore daylight.

Of course, DST has long since outlived its welcome; but its historical origins are sound.

I mean, I would've thought you'd just change the schedules of things rather than literally redefine time.

Thanks bud. But what are your thoughts on DST? Is there anyone who actually likes this?

I never find anyone online who does, but I hear a lot of people in person say they do.

However, they often don't realize that the goal of eliminating DST is to set things as permanently in daylight savings - so you always get more sunlight in the evening.

I have had the occasional person still be in favor of changing times even after this was explained.

I commented 2 minutes after you, so here’s a person that is in favor of keeping DST/changing times. It’s not that I realize keeping DST permanently is an option, it’s just that there is no precedent whether that would be the case, correct me if I’m wrong. Last we had this debate in the EU, 3/4 respondents were German, and iirc there was a split as to whether DST or Standard time should become the new normal.

Permanent DST is fine with me, permanent Standard time feels bad.

The vast majority of the time I see eliminating DST presented, it's presented as permanent daylight savings. Interesting to know that in EU the last time it was proposed there was a split.

Member states would be able to choose whether to remain on “permanent summer” or “permanent winter” time under the draft directive, which passed by 410 votes to 192.

              Same thing in USA

              Same thing in USA

One thing is clear: A majority of Americans and states want to stop the tradition of moving clocks an hour ahead in spring and an hour back in the fall. A 2019 survey by the Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 28% of people polled are happy with the status quo. Meanwhile, 31% would like to be on daylight-saving time year-round, while 40% would prefer sticking solely with standard time.

NP! And I personally loathe DST... but I do at least understand why people thought it was a good idea at the time it was adopted as a standard. It's just that since it no longer really serves its intended purpose, and so is ultimately pretty unnecessary in the modern age, I think we would be better off doing away with it now.

I also think changing the time twice per year is not really as much of an effort as people make it out to be. Especially since I personally get way more done in the evening than in the morning, having one hour sunlight extra at night means I get one hour more per day.

You could just wake up earlier. DST is just a circadian rhythm change you can't opt out of. You can change your circadian rhythm yourself any time you want.

I am not an early riser. I just don't want to switch twice a year. I don't think we should be doing something that increases depression and suicide for little benefit. Everyone has a different ability to change their circadian rhythm. I am glad for you that it does not effect you much. Not everyone is so lucky. For me, the time change can screw me up for up to 2 weeks, especially spring forward. There are plenty of people that are even worse than me. My circadian rhythm is so set that I can't sleep in on the weekends unless I have 2-4 days to adjust.
