Fitness Weekly Discussion
What have you been doing lately for your own fitness? Try out any new programs or exercises? Have any questions for others about your training? Want to vent about poor behavior in the gym? Started a new diet or have a new recipe you want to share? Anything else health and wellness related?
This. (Context: https://tildes.net/~games/toc/beat_saber_the_oculus_quest_2)
I looooove the more intense, sweaty songs. Feels really great to be losing weight despite being locked down.
Man, I love Beat Saber! As someone who has only ever approached physical activity as a chore with maybe some satisfaction at the end from a job well done, I can honestly say that it's the first exercise I've done for the pure enjoyment of it.
Did you get set up with custom songs yet?
No custom songs yet. I'm having a lot of fun with the native ones and some of the DLC so far. I'll probably get through all the official stuff before I really get into modding / custom stuff :)
And yeah man, sometimes I fire up beat saber when I can't sleep at night. I don't think there's any workout-related thing that ever compares to that.
That makes a lot of sense - the native tracks are awesome for the game, and I think Jaroslav Beck's music was a huge part of making the whole thing work before the community was in place to start mapping other songs.
The Panic! At The Disco DLC is awesome, it's unfortunate there's only 4 songs. I finally finished The Greatest Show in expert+faster+full combo! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLGxWrJ8s-A
Oh my god this is fuckin nuts. I love it!
If you think that's nuts, check out the custom "Shatter Me" map (Stirling):

It's one of my favourites, really want to play that one.
Man I wish I didn't live in Brazil. Things here are expensive as hell.
This is right up my alley. I grew up with DDR, Guitar Hero (which made me pick up guitar), played the hell out of Beatmania on GameBoy and I love these kind of games even now at 34. I mostly gave up on gaming, it's rare that a new one keeps me entertained for too long, but these types of games never fail with me.
I've done my first full week cycling on Zwift, with rides on routes in Richmond (Virginia), Harrogate, and Paris. I'm feeling great about it so far - having graphs, power averages, and the rest very much appeals to my "make progress in video game" instincts. It's compelling enough that I'm likely to pay for at least a few months and try to get those numbers up, and having a pre-selected course each day is a nice way to change the style of workout and avoid falling into a rut.
I do find the ingame experience overcomplicated, with a bunch of power ups and social functions that I'm unlikely to ever use and don't have any particular enthusiasm to investigate, and it's a shame that the graphics are quite basic - I'd love to take in the scenery in an engine with a bit more visual impact and some nice lighting - but the core experience does what it needs to do.
my routine currently looks like:
M,W,F: goblet squats with 35 lb. kettlebell, pull ups + deadhangs, push ups.
Tu,Th: kettlebell swings, inverted body weight rows, dips.
I also do a lot of walking and a few times a week I’ll do ~20-30 minutes of punching this thing.
I gradually increase reps + sets. Seems to work well, for me!
I have been increasing my intake, as I’ve been spending weekends for the past month or so with the GF. We eat and drink well. So, I have put on a few pounds (~160 lbs., now)... but I think some of the weight went into muscle, as I’ve measured my waist and it seems to be about the same, if not slightly smaller, as when I was ~154 lbs.
Nice to see a fellow kettlebell user on here. For home gym, they really can't be beat.
Yea, they're pretty effective at getting the heart rate up! I probably can diversify the exercises I'm doing with the one I have... but I've kinda settled on that routine and don't care to overthink it much. If anything, I might add some kettlebell rows and maybe deadlifts (if I get a heavier kettlebell) to the mix sometime in the future.
Yeah, I love that they are an aerobic exercise, but still feel like weight training and not like running.
I do love kettlebell rows, definitely would recommend those. If you've got swings already, I don't think you super need the deadlifts, but they can still be fun. If you want to do deads with a lighter bell, look up single leg kettlebell deadlifts, those can get you a lot of mileage from a lighter bell and work your support muscles a lot due to all the balancing.
I am really loving snatches. The feeling of learning to move your forearm around the bell rather than moving the bell around your wrist is very martial arts.
Back to running. Being a smoker means that it takes two, three tries to be able to run for 45 minutes to an hour and until then its powerwalking and then running and then running for longer and longer times.
Currently at try two to get back to it, so majority running.
Well I tend to prefer running when its dark (and since its winter it gets completely dark around four in the afternoon here) but we used to do mornings sometimes too when we ran two to three times a week.
Now also for me since I do weight lifting three to four times a week its kinda tricky to squish it in to a good schedule but its also nice having a mellow kind of cardio squished in at times.
I’m back on the Ring Fit train. Trying to do that every other day and Peloton cycling classes on the other days.
