So, Bud light 'never meant to be divisive'; they dabbled in rainbow capitalism, rolled over to stupid backlash, and abandoned their spokesperson to face the hate they brought down on her. Super cool.

They didn't just backtrack, they fucking catered to the bigots that got pissed off. What they did was worse then if they just didn't do anything at all. Fuck them.

You are exactly right. Stoked the hate, told the bigots they were right, flipped off Dylan Mulvaney and dropped the mic. Fuck them, seriously.

Seems like such a dumb response from a financial/business POV. Had they held firm they wouldn't of pissed off two large groups of people and just one. The right wing would've either moved to another Annheiser-Busch brand or forgotten about the controversy. But then they pissed off the rest of us, and we're better at boycotts lol.

Which makes me think it was a knee jerk reaction to having their brand labeled the woke brand that grooms children. They did vote two execs quietly during the fallout, after all.

Companies usually rarely have true "support" for something in the same way that a person would support something. We support organizations and ideas that align with our values, whereas companies support organizations and ideas that will maximize profit. Occasionally there will be some privately owned companies where the owners do try to implement their values in business decisions (Chic Fil A, Hobby Lobby), but for any publicly traded company their stance on anything is quite fluid.

Budweiser really did bungle this one, though. It's impressive for a company to rile up such different demographics.

Well they riled up the bigots...a nd then when the bigots protested, they went the total opposite way and riled up the people who they orginally were trying to cater to. They didn't just backtrack, they outright tried to court hte bigots and show that they really didn't mean it! I don't feel sorry for them at all. All they did was make things worse and I hope all their kissing the ass of the bigots doesn't make the bigots feel forgiving of them either.

But once the backlash started it was too late, you can't give them what they want as they won't go back to drinking your stuff anyway.

Target and Bud Light are just some of the first in what I predict will be a very unfortunate long line of companies jumping ship in terms of outspoken LGBT+ support. Chr. Hansen being another company to abandon LGBT+ policies as well - it has caused quite a lot of controversy here in Denmark, which is well deserved I think.

In my opinion, you should either you go all in on pinkwashing and profiting off rainbow capitalism, or you don't. Companies pulling this are just miserable cynical hypocritical cowardly trash. As @Sheep commented, it proves they don't support anything at all - only their profits - such is rainbow capitalism.

To be fair, Target's response was essentially a half-assed "We'll look into it," and a few stores moved Pride merch a bit further back. The store I go to in Houston still had Pride stuff all over, so it's nowhere near the company-wide about-face that Bud did.

Edit: That's not to glorify them. I'm just saying corporations aren't your friends and that's about the best response you could hope for from them given people were threatening their employees lives. They're not going to make a statement about social issues unless they think it will benefit the company.

To contact and form business deals with marginalized people who are trying to make ends meet and throw them under the bus the minute that bigots open their mouths is truly disgusting. Now queer creatives and influencers have to worry if the deals they're making are going to result in being left out in the cold like this.

This is exactly what everyone who speaks out against Rainbow Capitalism was trying to warn about.

Replying here because my distaste for their company doesn't particularly merit a top level comment. Instead I'll just say that I had similar thoughts that you captured very well. This June I'm really disheartened with how obvious companies have made it that Pride support is contingent on its commercial convenience. "Just slap a rainbow on it...but not if it will upset anyone," essentially. I'll be investing my money into companies that have continued their support or amplified it in the face of the virulent hatred going around this year.

In regards to buying ABInbev products - it's another one of the moments where I have to sigh and write off a bunch of things I liked as 'collateral damage' as we circle the drain in late game capitalism. I appreciate your comment because it reminded me to actually go check which brands fall under their company and a fair number were brands that I considered "smaller" or did not associate with them. I'll take it as an opportunity to explore new things.

Honestly, I never think the companies truly believe it save some few small ones. What is good abotu companies showing support is it is showing where the wind is blowing. If they feel comfortable outright showing support it shows their marketers have seen that the majority want to see that and it would be good PR and it woudl make them more money through making people happy then lose money to pissed off people.

I think the most succinct way to describe rainbow capitalism is that it's better than nothing, but still not good. It's better than if she never felt safe to come out, never got any widespread support, but it's still not an acceptable way for any entity to treat a person, whether that's a business or an individual.

It's worth remembering they suspended/likely fired two execs over the fallout. So her advocates within the company probably got wiped out of their jobs as scapegoats because they said the brand needed to be less fratty. I doubt the Annheiser-Busch leadership fesls very positively about trans people so it also comes with no surprise.
