As a general rule I dislike self-help books of any sort. How to be more productive (just do it, duh), how to organize your trauma and clean out your closet (have you tried just doing it?), and all the rest of them on topics from adventuring, to self-love, or curing your goldfish's anxiety. Maybe I'm just overly suspicious. But to me, any self-help book I've ever been borrowed, that I've bought and regretted, that I've requested from the library...none of them actually taught me how to self-help. It merely looked at me and said, "Ah, you silly, helpless person. Here, have 5 steps on curing your procrastination," and left me to it. In my mind, self-help books are recipes but you have none of the ingredients. It's not exactly helpful...unless you just like to read recipes. (Which hey, fair enough. Some people DO like that.)

What works for me might not work for you especially if you are looking for a guided meditation, a discovery on the brain patterns of the neurodiverse, or whatever. But I just like finding books that inspire me - to create, to be a better person, to go somewhere new, to love my friends more, etc. And those books are everywhere in plain clothes. It's A Dog's Purpose or The Travelling Cat Chronicles that helps you love your pets a little more. The result: I have spent many hours researching the ideal tank set up for a hermit crab that isn't even mine. It's A Great Divorce - I can't remember any of the details but the feeling of it has stuck with me for years. I am not necessarily taking advice from Holden Caulfield a la The Catcher in the Rye but it reminds me to live earnestly. More results: I put aside my anxieties to apologize quickly to my friends and I let them know very often that I love them. The Lord of the Rings for learning to love your friends, to love adventure, to love goodness. I'm not quite sure what sort of self-help Catch-22 might offer and even less sure about On The Road but the point is - your best self is the one that is inspired to grow, to be more than what you are, and all the rest of it. When I am at my most anxious, my least-best-self, picking up a book and stepping outside of my brain for a little is the fastest way I've found growth.

If you despise the industry, don't participate. Step around it. Self-help can come in so many other forms other than a "Your best self is on the other side of this book - trust me!" marketing tagline slapped on some schlocky self-serving nonsense.

Disclaimer: I am not a person who loves to read recipes just to read recipes. I will be making the cake.

Does anyone else find themselves in the loop of always starting a new project? Of looking up tips and tricks to clean their room but then never get around to the actual cleaning? You want to buy just this one extra thing and THAT will change everything (spoiler: it doesn't). If I could just make a schedule for myself, then I could...

That's the "getting started" loop. Where you're always looking for the newest, so-called solution without enacting any of them.

Disclaimer: I have diagnosed ADHD and take Vyvanse Monday-Friday. But ADHD meds aren't a magical panacea. I'm a less anxious person. I'm able to get my work done. I've got the basics covered. But my personal life is really...neglected? I'm certainly not thriving. I don't have a good role model for what "adulting" looks like. Yknow the people who have thriving social lives, who can do their laundry without procrastinating, who get their butts into the gym without overthinking it.

I have so many hopes and dreams from being able to finally cleaning up my room and keeping it organized to wanting to stream and make videos for Youtube. I want to go back to school. But I am so afraid of change and not doing a good job, of not doing it perfectly, that I just don't start anything.

How do you avoid the loop?

I had a few questions if you (or someone else) doesn't mind - I was browsing the Proton website but there were a few things I didn't understand. What is the benefit of "Easy Switch"? It seems like it just auto-forwards your emails to your Proton address, but wouldn't that mean your emails could still be scanned or whatever by the original email provider? And how exactly do you use the true email aliases? Do you determine the alias when you're sending each message? Is there a limit to the number of aliases? Maybe I'm overthinking it a bit. I'm curious about their VPN and their password manager but are they trustworthy? I had Mulvad as my VPN for a bit but I haven't heard anything about the reliability of Proton's products in that area.

For folks who are enjoying the anime of "Solo Leveling", I would recommend the novel-turned-manhwa I'm currently getting caught up on: "SSS-Class Suicide Hunter" (renamed "SSS-Class Revival Hunter" but a lot of sources still use the original name so you'll find references to both).

It's easily become one of my favorites. I binge read my way through most of it in two or three days. If you enjoy the original premise of how Jinwoo started his journey in Solo Leveling, you'll find this series takes that idea and turns it up to 11. If you end up giving it a try, let me know what you think. I really hope that it will eventually be turned into an anime because it really is THAT good.

Beyond that? I'm not sure what to watch right now. All my favorites are in intermission and nothing on crunchyroll has really caught my eye. I might go re-watch Hunter x Hunter at this point.

I saw a specific piece of advice that said to take the summaries of previous jobs from your resume and then ask chatgpt to rewrite them using the job duties from the job posting. Is that sound advice? I would have no way of verifying that the description remains accurate to what they actually did.

Also, separately, I read that you could just copy and paste the job duties in white font to "trick" the resume filters and not have to rewrite your job summaries each time. Is it really that easy or is a person going to see through that?

What does a good tech resume focus on? They have their frameworks, libraries, and languages listed separately of their previous job summaries. At a glance, to me, it seems similar to other tech resumes I've seen but I'm truly not sure.

Unfortunately, I don't have anyone to introduce them to. I work in a completely unrelated field and don't interact with anyone who is in a job related to coding. As silly as it sounds, this is one of the things I've been beating myself up over the most. I feel like if I knew the right person then all this stress could be avoided.

you're a little out of your depth

I feel this from the bottom of my soul haha. I think your point about their application materials not being up to par might be the biggest contributing factor. From what I've read there seems to be a big emphasis on coding projects or previous work being on Github and/or certifications, both of which their resume is lacking. What sort of projects do people put on their Github if they are in between jobs?

They live near Toronto but I am helping from abroad (I live in the USA) so I am not sure if there is a program like that. When you say someone whose job it is to help career seekers - what type of person is that? I know they've submitted their resume to recruiters like Randstad but that seems like a service that just sends job posts similar to Indeed?

I will try to see if there are workshops or events that they might be able to attend as well. I didn't consider those would be popular for software devs.

Thank you so much for the honest feedback and advice. I just want to help but it's been very difficult and I've been feeling very self-critical since I'm struggling to do so.

I am helping someone look for a job related to coding (in Canada). Software development, web development, app development, etc. You get the idea. I have no connections in tech to help them network. And I don't understand what the difference is between an intermediate/intro position, what qualifications to help them highlight on their resume, or what is preventing them from finding a job. I know they've applied to hundreds of posts on LinkedIn and Indeed, etc. but they have only received a single interview (but no job).

I am at a loss - how do I help this person? How do you help someone find a job in a field you don't understand or have any network to help them meet the right person? Tech specific advice would be a godsend, but really any job-search related tricks, tips, etc. that I can pass on would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to avoid romance-heavy themes, please do consider giving Cats a watch. Other animated musicals may help steer you in a better direction as well - The Lion King is not too romantic or overly happy, Moana might also be a candidate though I am not sure if there's a live/theatre version yet. Maybe one of the Muppet movies? Those are for kids but Muppet Treasure Island has Tim Curry and it's really fun. I hope you find something that helps you enjoy musicals a little more :)

I think that musicals often capture and play up the moments where we, in our day-to-day lives, feel that certain something that only music can capture. It's like how the perfect song can amplify a "first dance" at a wedding, a song that makes you remember your mother on a Saturday afternoon, how a night drive can become something almost magical and...out of life. I think that's the feeling musicals are trying to capture. That "out of life" feeling we can get when a song, when music creates these big moments where you might otherwise have silence or dialogue.

I think my suggestion would be to try some...lower stakes musicals. And, while Team America might disagree, Cats and The Lion King are my top recommendations. Not the, er, newer Cats to be clear. You'll want the 1998 version. You don't need to logic your way into understanding why cats are singing because we've already firmly departed logical territory. Who is to say that cats aren't always singing instead of talking? On that premise, I think you'll be able to enjoy the music more for what it is delivering: telling a story, creating excitement, and delivering loads of talent. I've introduced guys and gals in their 20s/30s to it and even those who weren't really into musicals had a good time and enjoyed themselves.

As for The Lion King, this is sort of an interchangeable recommendation. Find an animated musical that you enjoy and see if you enjoy its theatre counterpart. For me, I watched the movie as a kid and then went and saw it live as an adult. It's also possible that played a factor - perhaps you might enjoy seeing a musical live more than just watching it on your TV? That has certainly been true of my experience with some musicals. Something about being in the audience versus watching through a screen. But perhaps taking an animated musical that you already enjoy and watching the theatre version will suit you better and allow you to ease into other musicals.

Maybe you'll have better luck with musicals that were made for being watched as film? Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, The Blues Brothers, Footloose (the 1984 version), Chicago, Sweeney Todd, or Moulin Rouge.

I am not the most well-read on political philosophy but I would like to say that based on my interpretation of Arendt and what is stated in this article...

I thought of all the other invisible bodies, with their fists up, tucked away and out of sight. If we take Hannah Arendt’s definition of the political – which is still one of the most dominant in mainstream discourse – as being any action that is performed in public, we must contend with the implications of what that excludes. If being present in public is what is required to be political, then whole swathes of the population can be deemed a-political – simply because they are not physically able to get their bodies into the street.

I don't particularly get the impression that the author understands Arendt either or they are being deliberately(?) ungenerous in their interpretation. Arendt does not say that it is necessary to be present in public in order to be political but rather, "...politics finds its authentic expression whenever citizens gather together in a public space to deliberate and decide about matters of collective concern."[1] And Arendt used this idea to criticize totalitarianism because it's antithetical to public debate and criminalizes criticism, etc.

To my own understanding, if we're following Arendt's way of thinking, and again I'll quote here because I think this captures it succinctly, "Public space refers to the activity of shared debate among plural human beings; this space and activity are maintained as long as opportunities exist for the gathering of citizens."[2]

I think by this definition, to participate in a public space does not necessarily need to mean: be outside, touching grass, participating in a march. Public space can very much be an online shared space where people engage in political debate. The internet did not exist for political debate and criticism of Nazi totalitarianism in Arendt's life and if it did, I don't think she would de-legitimize the political power or equality of those who use online public forums as a stand-in for their physical presence in the streets.

So sure, civil disobedience and and marches are excellent ways to reclaim public space (as in actual places we can physically occupy) but I would suspect that Arendt would see cyber disobedience and forum debate as authentic expressions of the political as well.

And even if I go the other way and say, sure, physical presence is necessary, then by Arendt's definition, if this space does not exist for someone, for whatever reason (physical, mental, etc.) it has lost its legitimacy because of those in power and citizens must try to reclaim that in whatever way they are able.

The author makes some more ungenerous claims about Arendt's neglect to understand that private things are political, etc. But I would like to say specifically,

Arendt failed to account for who is allowed in to the public space, of who’s in charge of the public.

Arendt's understanding and writing of the political is shaped on the fact that she, a Jewish woman, had to flee Germany because of who was allowed in the public space. I find it pretty repugnant to suggest that Arendt "failed to account" for this because I think she DOES account for it. It's the whole basis for her work.

I'd highly recommend watching a few youtube creators that specifically talk about style and the fit of clothing. If you don't know what you like or if you're buying things that you end up disliking later, I think this is a good place to start. I would recommend checking out a video like this since he talks specifically about the fit of clothes or find something similar if you don't enjoy his style. Look at how clothes fit other people and decide if you want to dress similarly. By doing your research and researching how things should fit and what it looks like on people who already have a confident sense of style, you'll be able to more easily replicate what you're trying to achieve. I also find it easier to shop for things when the creator has a similar body type - more often than not, fashion youtubers will tell you the products they're buying and you'll have some reasonable certainty that you will like the way it looks before you even make your purchase.

Replying here because my distaste for their company doesn't particularly merit a top level comment. Instead I'll just say that I had similar thoughts that you captured very well. This June I'm really disheartened with how obvious companies have made it that Pride support is contingent on its commercial convenience. "Just slap a rainbow on it...but not if it will upset anyone," essentially. I'll be investing my money into companies that have continued their support or amplified it in the face of the virulent hatred going around this year.

In regards to buying ABInbev products - it's another one of the moments where I have to sigh and write off a bunch of things I liked as 'collateral damage' as we circle the drain in late game capitalism. I appreciate your comment because it reminded me to actually go check which brands fall under their company and a fair number were brands that I considered "smaller" or did not associate with them. I'll take it as an opportunity to explore new things.

@Akhesa, I'm also a fellow early access player!

I only have ~24 hours of gameplay but I haven't touched the game since the first patch that prompted patch branching saves. I really value the raw, "first experience" of playing a game and it felt really important to me to play the game in a more finished state because I enjoyed myself so much. That might not make sense for everyone, but I really wanted to make sure I was getting the "full experience" without feeling compelled to start over with a character that I felt very attached to. It's been really hard to be patient for the last three years! I've skipped reading most of the patch notes to avoid spoilers but every so often I've had a look at new classes or races they've added to get myself excited again. The devs have clearly put a lot of hard work and love into this game and I hope they receive a lot of warmth and praise for those efforts. I can't wait to revisit my tiefling and start my journey again!

You are burying the lede by calling this a joke and then making a gross generalization that "offending people" is what constituted "jail time".

You're welcome to provide a different example to support your point but the man in the article you linked, Mark Meechan, was not sentenced to jailed. He did spend a night in jail upon his arrest, but he was sentenced to pay a fine of £800 (which he then refused to pay in lieu of donating to a hospital charity before the money was seized from his bank account).

Furthermore, his sentencing happened in 2018 which is important because in 2012 there was a guideline added to the Communications Act 2003 which, summarized: Communications that are merely "grossly offensive, indecent, obscene or false" will be prosecuted only when it can be shown to be necessary and proportionate. This was further clarified in 2013, first with interim guidelines and then revised guidelines following public consultation,

Social Media and other Electronic Communications - Guidance language

Prosecutors should consider the following, non-exhaustive ECHR factors, and should only proceed if they are satisfied there is sufficient evidence that the communication in question is more than:

    • Offensive, shocking or disturbing; or
    • Satirical, iconoclastic or rude comment; or
    • The expression of unpopular or unfashionable opinion about serious or trivial matters, or banter or humour, even if distasteful to some or painful to those subjected to it; or
    • An uninhibited and ill thought-out contribution to a casual conversation where participants expect a certain amount of repartee or "give and take";

This is with reference to "contemporary standards… the standards of an open and just multi-racial society", assessing whether the particular message in its particular context is beyond the pale of what is tolerable in society" adopting the observations, as guidance illuminating these terms, in DPP v Collins [2006] UKHL 40, Chambers, Smith v ADVFN [2008] 1797 (QB).

    Full guidance available here

All that to say - these guidelines were already in place when he made the video where, per the article you linked, he says, "gas the Jews" and "Sieg Heil" to prompt the dog to give a Nazi salute.

Per these guidelines, his freedom of expression was considered and the prosecution continued. "Prosecutors should only proceed with cases under section 1 MCA 1988 or section 127 CA 2003 where the interference with freedom of expression, is necessary and is proportionate."

His video received 3 million views, he is on record as saying he doesn't think he did anything wrong, and I'll quote this part, "He said that he could see how people could be offended by his video but that he doesn’t “think hurting someone’s feelings is a crime.”" This is also something that prosecution considers as noted by the Divisional Court in DPP v Kingsley Smith, ""the [offender] intended his message be grossly offensive to those to whom it related; or that he was aware at the time of sending that it might be taken to be so by a reasonable member of the public who read or saw it"." (emphasis mine).

There are a number of other cases related to the CA 2003 where their offensive messages have been protected by "freedom of expression" including Kate Scottow who was convicted in February 2020 for tweeting transphobic insults. Her conviction was overturned on appeal in December 2020.

Now, whether or not you think these types of guidelines result in too many prosecutions, sensitivity to obscenity online, etc. are all separate conversations. But, in my opinion, you shouldn't be supporting your points with someone who trained a dog to salute to antisemitic language and thinks he did nothing wrong. It's not thought-policing that the CA 2003 is doing. It's policing tangible, real world communication that has tangible, real world effects on people.

    Genesis Noir

This is the game I recently started. It has an art style that might not be very everyone but I immediately found myself captivated by it. It adds so much flavor to the puzzle-solving experience. Thinking about it, some might find the puzzles a little simplistic? It is self-described in the tags as "point and click". For me, it's more about experiencing the art. I don't typically select games with "being difficult" as a necessary quality. This is the type of game you play because you want to enjoy the art, the music, the atmosphere. If you prefer direct storytelling, need dialogue to follow a narrative, or hate jazz, I would not recommend this. But for anyone who likes "art turned game" style experiences, I'd say check out the trailer and see what you think.

    Pummel Party

I think this is most easily described as an online alternative to Mario Party. If your online friend group enjoys mini-games or destroying trust with sabotage then you'll enjoy this. This is just plain, good, party-style fun. It's a little rough around the edges but in the best way possible and even when I'm losing, I'm having fun.

    Hi-Fi RUSH

One of the most fun games I've played in recent memory. If you like music, funky art, innovative combat then please check this one out. The characters are great, the dialogue and voice acting are well done. Everything feels very polished. This truly feels like a game made by people who love games. I'm not good at rhythm games, but that doesn't hold me back whatsoever - there's even a mode for people who want to focus more on the story than the combat. Highly replayable, highly addictive. Everything about this game just feels like FUN. And if you're the type who is a rhythm perfectionist, then I think this will provide you an excellent challenge.

    Sons of the Forest

This is everything I loved about The Forest and turned up to 11. There's just more of all my favorite things. It has one of the most intuitive and fun building systems I've encountered in a game. The devs made it SO satisfying to build a log wall - placing the logs looks, feels, and sounds great. There's so many surprising little bits of customization and it seems like they've continued to add a lot of the flavorful decor items that were missed in the initial launch. The game itself is gorgeous - I wasn't expecting such a large upgrade from the first game but the devs really delivered. The island genuinely feels large and worth exploring for all its secrets and they've added even more things to do and see since launch. And while there are always some hiccups with multiplayer, I would say that the co-op is one of the more stable and enjoyable I've experienced. As far as the story goes...I'm going to hide this part for those who prefer to blind play their games.

<Story Spoilers> I wouldn't call this a "direct" sequel if that's what you're expecting. The stories are absolutely interconnected but it doesn't necessarily feed into the "father-son" narrative a ton as the events on the island are mostly independent to the location. But it absolutely shines in world building in a way that I didn't expect.

I've played a ton more this year - League of Legends (my most hated favorite addiction), Garden Galaxy (it's pretty, there's no objective, it's relaxing, charming, and you should absolutely give it a peek), Pokemon Violet, Dying Light 2, Street Fighter 6, Bear and Breakfast, Ruined King (even for non-League players, this is an excellent, challenging turn-based RPG), and more. Feel free to ask me anything about a game I mentioned or if you're looking for specific genre recommendations. I'd be happy to provide more :)
