I read the headline, hoped that this movement was based on a general anti-military feeling - and was not disappointed. Like Mirna Haidar, one of the people interviewed for this article, “I'm definitely against any discrimination based on someone being trans or queer, etc.” But like Cindy Sheehan, also quoted in this article, I believe “the capacity for increased carnage should not be celebrated as a victory”.

Murder is wrong, even if it's sanctioned by the state, so if something keeps our trans friends away from this moral wrong, it's hard to see that as an entirely bad thing.

I only wish more people were banned from the military. Let's not discriminate - let's ban everyone from murder!

I feel like complicating the issue of LGBTQ equality with anti-military sentiments is a great way to turn off the very people who need to change their views on LGBTQ folk. I'm not particularly fond of the military and we've got a serious military-worship problem here in the US. But, imo, there's a lot of overlap between LGBTQ-phobes and folks who are super into the military. I would think/hope that members of the LGBTQ community being willing to put their lives on the line for their country would prompt some change in that negative mindset.

Which is a little weird, now that I type it out. LGBTQ folks shouldn't have to risk life and limb to get equality and respect. But still I think mixing two completely different movements (anti-military and pro-LGBTQ) does more to harm than good.

It's definitely confusing to conflate the two issues. It's a very strange idea to think that LGBT people should protest against transgender people going into the military at the same time as politicians and military people are protesting against transgender people going into the military. If both groups are working towards the same outcome... doesn't that mean they're on the same side? ;)

        This gets very confusing.

If someone is going to be an anti-military activist, they shouldn't single out transgender people for special attention. They should protest against the entire military, non-discriminatorily.

If a trans person wants to be in the military, however, why should we be denying them that right? The reality is that the military is going to exist whether you or I agree with it's existence or not. Banning them from the draft is a very different thing than banning them outright.

It's good that their message isn't focused on the exclusionary but why can't we argue both ways? That they shouldn't be excluded but also that war is bad?

If an anti-military activist sees the military as sanctioned murder, then I can see how they could think people shouldn't be allowed to participate in that whether they want to or not.

i'm not seeing the title gore, personally. i think it's pretty straightforward.

it makes them sounds super transphobic, considering there are plenty of trans people that want to be in the military, but can't now because of the ban

It might not be title gore, as in a title that's extremely convoluted and difficult to read, but is certainly a misleading title. It seems like some people want to maintain the discriminatory ban against trans people serving in the military - and, what makes it worse, these people are LGBT activists who should be against discrimination.

Luckily, it's a misleading title and there is no intent to discriminate.

There's a fantastic episode of the podcast Citations Needed that touches on the issue.

The episode as a whole is focused on pushing back against the idea that trans issues are a boutique issue of "identity politics" and not a struggle for survival. It rejects the idea that discussions about trans issues should be centered around things like he military ban or the "bathroom debate" instead of on issues that effect trans people the most; homelessness, mental health, suicide, and imprisonment.
