Happy Father's Day, Tildes!
Extending a warm Happy Father's Day to all fathers, grandfathers, adoptive fathers, step fathers, god fathers, spiritual fathers, father in law's, soon to be fathers, those who would have been fathers, our departed fathers, and others that I have missed.
May your day be beautiful and wonderful.
Celebrate!
Edit: Okay it's Monday now : ) How'd it go? For fathers with very young children did you guys get home made cards from the mom plus stickers contributed by your child(ren)? Where are you going to store these cards, or do they go straight in the recycling, you monster?
Find out whether you have or haven't forgotten about Father's Day in your own country today with this handy visualisation.
How did everyone, who actively participates in such things, celebrate father's day this year? I'd be interested to hear how things vary from country to country.
(England, United Kingdom)
My father had existing plans during the day but he visited my wife, my toddler and me in the evening. We had a pretty basic celebration really - some light snacks, drinks and dessert and conversation. We also captured a three generation photo together: grandfather, father and son.
We more or less did the same (SE US here). My parents came over and played with my kids. Ate a meal together, caught up on life. It's nice to be acknowledged, but I tend to suffer from imposter syndrome so generally feel that I'm not really doing much to begin with to warrant celebration.
I'm glad you had what sounds like a nice day.
I got up at around 6am, fired up the BBQ and threw some ribs on.
My wife and kid were out on the deck enjoying the sun, then said a baby deer was sitting just below the deck. it had been born maybe a few hours before at most. the momma dear was kind of freaking out with people out there, so we all went back inside.
20 min. later the baby deer tries to take its first steps, and ends up getting entirely tangled up in the neighbor's soccer net. I had to go out there, and untangle it from the net. the mom was not particularly happy about that.
put the baby deer back under the deck, and mom came and got it within 30 min. or so.
then got to chill with my son playing some NMS. all in all, very rewarding day. (and the ribs were awesome, had my parents over to celebrate father's day with us.)
That's amazing that you got to be a better father to that fawn than they usually get. : ) any uh, adorable fawn pictures you could share with us?
Never used this place before, but hopefully this works.
My youngest sent me this that morning. You can see the soccer net it's going to get stuck in shortly.

B'awwwwww it's super cute! Such a tires little baby!!
might have weighed 8 to 10 lbs at most? It was tiny.

My day started with sleeping in a little bit (a later night than usual helped in that regard), followed by making baked doughnuts, which is the usual Sunday morning ritual in our house. I got a handmade card from the kiddo and a card from my wife. After breakfast, the kiddo wanted to do a science experiment with me from one of his STEAM books, which was good, messy fun. In the afternoon, we went to a baseball game, and, for the first time since we've been bringing the kiddo, stayed for the whole game. (Our team won in the bottom of the night with bases loaded. You could hardly ask for a more exciting conclusion.) Then we picked up some barbecue for dinner, and I did bedtime with the kiddo.
Honestly, it was a great day. I felt very special.
How do you make baked donuts? This sounds interesting.
I've been using a recipe from King Arthur Baking for years now, though I have modified it a bit. The result is a cake doughnut, and it's delicious and perfect on a Sunday morning.
Genuine question: is this type of post relevant on Tildes?
My account may be a few years old, but I have not been active until recently, so I am trying to get a feel for how the philosophy of the site is realized in practice.
It isn't an in-depth dive on the history of father's day. It isn't (at least not explicitly) inviting discussion about specific father's day celebrations, cultural differences, or any other such topic. It is a reminder of a yearly event.
I mean, Tildes has pretty long standing April Fools' Day threads. There's a time and a place for serious, in-depth discussion. And sometimes a little frivolity is what the doctor ordered.
Thank you for the context! I am not categorically opposed to posts like this (and I'm certainly in no position to make demands on whether it is allowed), I'm just trying to get my expectations dialed in.
genuinely want to know as well -- I think by the lack of response the answer is, no, it isn't and I would not be outraged to have it be deleted. I think what I could have done is to more explicitly invite a discussion: how did you celebrate, who is celebrating with you and what's a good memory of one, etc, or share some more insightful articles about the holiday : )
even if there isn't a bunch of responses, the sentiment and the well-wishes are nice to read even from a stranger. I'm sure plenty of other dads feel the same way, even if they don't take the minute to reply.
Thank you for putting kindness forward.
Generally it works better if it’s framed as an invitation for discussion. I.e. “What made you feel special this Father’s Day?”
