So my accountability partner right now is Jack, my son… He's 17. So he and I get a report of all the things that are on our phones, all of our devices, once a week. If anything objectionable comes up, your accountability partner gets an immediate notice. I'm proud to tell ya, my son has got a clean slate."

Who wants to bet the son has a second device that doesn’t have any monitoring software, and so does Mike Johnson. This is so dumb on so many levels. Instead of having a healthy relationship where they talk about sex and pornography, they make it even more taboo and criminalize it in the household. Moreover, they choose an obviously flawed method of monitoring. Oh, and now there’s a national security leak because he wants to pretend he doesn’t beat his meat.

Right? Imagine being so arrogant as to think you’ve prevented your teen from accessing content simply by monitoring the devices you control/bought for them. There are few forces as innovative or persistent as teenage sex drive.

Though if I’m being honest, this is totally just Johnson promoting a company for money. Likely with a bonus perk of signaling how easily bought he is.

My conversation with my son around porn boiled down to three topics:

Men need a release valve from time to time, but like all things moderation is important.

People in relationships rarely do the things you see in porn, don't use it as an instructional video.

Don't get infected with malware digging for porn.

People need a release valve, it's not just men. Your son should know that the girls and women he interacts with are people just like him.

No, I doubt either has a second device. This is not an untypical way that Christian men (not sure about other faiths) hold each other accountable. It's not that unusual, what's unusual is that it's in the national news only because of Mr Johnson's new position.

For many years I was deeply involved in Christian circles and several men's sharing groups. It was common for us to share openly about our lives and in particular our struggles within our marriages. We probably would have used this software if it was available back then but the internet was new and internet porn wasn't as pervasive as it is now.

There's a lot to be said for personal accountability. During that time I built the strongest male friendships I've ever had and those men were closer than my brother for over 20 years. We had a mutual agreement that none of us ever wanted to compromise the integrity of our vows to our wives and committed to help each other to try and stay away from porn, but more importantly to stay focused on our marriages and to guard against anything or anyone that would damage the intimacy and trust that we'd committed to with our wives. There's a helluva lot of men who don't even have a deep male friendship, let alone someone who would actually care if they fooled around on their significant other - so we viewed our friendship and accountability as a rare privilege.

The fact that this man and his son recognize that porn is often the start of a fantasy that turns into a trap that can easily compromise intimacy within a marriage, or damage a new relationship before it even gets that far, is only odd because its not common to talk about it - especially in a media world that makes a great deal of money from using sex drives to get attention. When men view porn the most common attitude is its 'no big deal.' But it most definitely can be [there's a reason there are entire subs devoted to escaping it] if your goal is to stay happily married to one person for the rest of your life. Those who have been addicted to it and tried to maintain a healthy marriage will acknowledge that, like all other addictions, it can cause massive problems, especially inside a marriage.

I mean, the stuff that has come out about his finances would support this point of view.

I can’t help but feel this guy must be up to his eyeballs in shit he should not be doing.

I don't think this guy is fit to be a representative, let alone speaker.

I am (I feel) in a small minority of people who believe that politicians handling classified material should have to pass the same vetting procedures as intelligence service employees.

I hope that "small minority" isn't very small, because I agree with you.
