They care about jobs, so they pull the rug out from under people's livelihoods to make way for "white" jobs. Not to beat a dead horse, but seeing this play out is incredibly sad. I do wonder in 30 years if we'll look back on this as a momentary regression.

Liberals take our recent history of social and moral progress for granted. So-called "progression" is not a guarantee or a natural trend of societies. When conditions during the warring states period gave rise to Confucianism in ancient China, women's rights and station in society were damaged in a way that lasted millennia. It's estimated that abortion rights in the US will likely not return to their pre-2022 state within our lifetimes, and there's no reason to believe it must inevitably ever return.

You aren't guaranteed to be on the "right side of history." History is written by those most successful, not those most piously progressive.

Predicting the future is always difficult and many people are overconfident. But wondering about a possible scenario doesn’t seem like a prediction?

I interpreted u/BroiledBraniac's comment not as a prediction, but as an expression of uncertainty about the future. I felt the sentiment about liberals taking progress for granted was apropos to their comment because I, too, wonder if we will look back and see this as a momentary regression.

I think there are always push backs when society is growing and changing. We see them as counter culture type movements which always lead to regressive tactics by the current culture that doesn't want to grow and change. This is always the case with oppressive hierarchies it seems and usually leads to fascist, populist movements who are lead by a charismatic leader that has all the "answers" and gives them someone to blame and hate.

Hopefully "momentary" is the key word and not just a regression.

UT Austin has eliminated multiple staff positions focused on diversity, equity and inclusion in the latest effort to comply with Texas' anti-DEI law.

Around 60 staffers were laid off Tuesday, according to the Texas Conference of the American Association of University Professors and the Texas NAACP.

Senate Bill 17, which bans Texas public universities from having DEI programs and trainings, went into effect Jan. 1. At the beginning of the year, UT Austin closed its Multicultural Engagement Center, which housed student groups like Latinx Community Affairs, the Asian Desi Pacific Islander American Collective, and Queer and Trans Black Indigenous People of Color and Allies. It also shut down Monarch, a program that offered support and scholarships to undocumented students. Members of these groups say they have struggled to continue their organizations' work on campus.
