TikTok users unboxing Chanel’s $825 Advent calendar are complaining about the quality of items in the holiday package.

The calendar, which starts on Dec. 5 instead of the first day of the month as a nod to the iconic perfume Chanel No. 5, features such items as a keychain, a Chanel-stamped wax seal and a perfume bottle-shaped paperweight. The package itself is shaped like a massive bottle of perfume.

“This has to be a joke,” TikTok creator Elise Harmon says in a video she posted Sunday, in which she unwraps the calendar. The first box she opens, labeled 9, reveals a sheet of branded stickers. “This is a joke! Stickers?”

People spent a lot of money knowing exactly the crap they were getting. Complained they got crap. Nothing more than continued social media attention seeking. Non-story, fluff.

The description for the product on Chanel’s website reads: "To celebrate the holiday season and mark 100 years of the legendary fragrance, CHANEL presents a first-of-its-kind calendar crafted in the timeless silhouette of the N°5 flacon. Count down to the holidays with this collector’s item featuring 27 boxes numbered from 5 to 31, filled with mysterious delights and surprises. A piece to treasure for years to come."

It goes on to list every single item. The product is sold out.

In my experience with advent calendars, the items inside them almost never match the price point. So anyone spending $800 on one expecting each of the 25 items to be worth ~$32 is in for a rude awakening. They will be lucky if the majority are worth $10-15, with only two (first and last) worth $35 just to give a false sense of hope. ;)

p.s. Ashens and NerdCubed have a yearly advent tradition, where they each buy an advent calendar at an agreed upon price point, and then compete against each other for who got the best item each day. They have sometimes spent significant sums of money on the calendars, and even the expensive, high-end ones are still pretty much universally disappointing. :P

This year's is surprisingly good though even if their target value for each day is 50% of what it should be due to bad maths.

If you're referring to Ashen & Nerd3. Yeah, Ashen's Star Trek one has already had a few surprisingly good items so far. I want that deck of cards and coaster set! But Nerd3's Doctor Who one, other than the bottle opener and wine cork (which are still pretty shit), has overall been pretty terrible so far. Even so, I do agree that both of this year's advent calendars are probably by far the best return value they have ever gotten.

p.s. I really miss them having a punishment for the day's loser. Advent just isn't the same without us being able to watch them suffer. :P

OMG, I am dumb, and clearly also bad at maths. I only now, after watching the day 9 video, just realized what you meant by the "50% of what it should be" remark. They spent £110 on each calendar...

They spent £110 on each calendar this year, but they keep saying £2.50 is the daily item value. But £2.50 x 25 is not £110, it's only £62.50. :P
