Captain Disillusion - Shutter Speed
Captain Disillusion is VFX artist and is mostly known for debunking video hoaxes, but he's branched out into more broadly educational content lately. He still has the same production quality though, and his writing is snappy. I learned a lot from this one.
Beau Miles - Running 220km in the footsteps of a murderer
Goofy Ravens Playing In The Snow (2021 Mar 15)
42 seconds of adorable joy of creation - no music no jump scares no narration.
edit: crows vs ravens long informative read - skip to Rosemary Mosco's comic for more adorableness.
Veritasium: Do People Really Understand The Scale of The Universe (2024 Jan 15)
Summary: Derek talks to college kids and asks them to arrange [alphabetical listing] galaxy, moon, planet, star, universe from smallest to biggest. Not to make anybody feel bad, but rather to inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation. Ends with a Carl Sagen quote.
Comment: I appreciate that we got to see a few kids be today's (xkcd) Lucky 10,000, and a comment reminded me of the (xkcd) Average Familiarity problem. For example, recently I've been playing Just Dance, and I couldn't even categorize nearly any of the songs by decade, let alone identify performer and history or dance type or name any moves.
Tom Scott: Five YouTubers. Five games. $10,000. ⋮ Money: the full series (2021 Dec 27)
Comment: I don't know any of these YouTubers except Tom, but it was highly engaging. This is a full hour of Prisoner's Dilemma and very fun to watch with a friend, pause, and comment on. The games are straightforward and nothing is harmful. Extra discussions on the meta-aspect of the game: these are YouTubers with their own followers and they know every move will be brought to light in this video -- how does knowing that there will be a revelation influence how we might behave in the face of temptation? The Murder Game Revolution That Has Gripped China by People Make Games
Also on Nebula.
Always fascinating to learn about something that's basically unknown here and huge somewhere else. Especially interesting to me how people show up to play with strangers.
A Drain Fly’s Happy Place Is Down Your Pipes | Deep Look
I get these ugly little things in my shower stall all the damn time. Super annoying because, as shown in the video, they repel water and can skate along its surface, so you can't even use the shower head to spray them back down the drain like you can with other insects that show up in your shower/tub. And if you smush them they leave a hydrophobic powder behind that doesn't come off unless you scrub it. I always feel guilty even killing insects anyways though, so I typically just try my best to ignore them.
Fascinating. I watched it, and I'm glad to learn they're not harmful and don't spread bacteria to us. But nevertheless:
immaturity alert
Ewwwwwwwww!!!!
Modern Conflicts: The Yugoslav Wars (Nebula)
Pokémon Terlet
I can’t find words to describe this except it’s one of the funniest short animations I have seen in a while. It’s only 2 minutes long, so very much worth the time.
Building the WORLDS FIRST PlayStation 5: Tablet Edition - DIY Perks
I love this guy, his videos are so informative and he always has some slightly wacky but totally cool ideas!
Recently watched Foraging Mussels / One of the most sustainable sources of animal based protein you can find by Seth Hughes. I follow this guy on TikTok and generally like his reserved, eco conscious attitude. Only found out he had a youtube by watching this video. In any case, even if you don't plan on foraging for mussels soon, I found this to be a nice watch.
The Alt-Right Playbook: The Reverse Gish Gallop
I love this series because it's a well presented way of learning how the Alt-Right works, honestly I feel like the whole playlist should be watched through by people taking part in online discourse.
