How The Channel Tunnel Works YouTube – Practical Engineering – 16th January 2024

    How The Channel Tunnel Works

Let's dive into the engineering and construction of the Channel Tunnel on its 30th anniversary.

It is a challenging endeavor to put any tunnel below the sea, and this monumental project faced some monumental hurdles. From complex cretaceous geology, to managing air pressure, water pressure, and even financial pressure, there are so many technical details I think are so interesting about this project.

Captain Disillusion is VFX artist and is mostly known for debunking video hoaxes, but he's branched out into more broadly educational content lately. He still has the same production quality though, and his writing is snappy. I learned a lot from this one.

Beau Miles - Running 220km in the footsteps of a murderer

Beau Miles - Running 220km in the footsteps of a murderer

A BLOODY LONG RUN - EPISODE 1: In 1864 the mass murdering pastoralist Angus McMillan cut an ambitious 220km path through the mountains between two remote gold mining towns in the heart of Victoria, Australia. 120 years later a group of bushwalkers stitched the trail back together. When I found out about the track I decided to run it, thinking ‘gee, this track has a story to tell’! Running 73 km a day for three days over steep, often unmarked terrain, and having grown up thinking McMillan was a colonial hero, there was a lot of terrain, and thinking, to be absorbed. I’d finally embarked on a running adventure that wasn’t just about running.

Veritasium: Do People Really Understand The Scale of The Universe (2024 Jan 15)

Summary: Derek talks to college kids and asks them to arrange [alphabetical listing] galaxy, moon, planet, star, universe from smallest to biggest. Not to make anybody feel bad, but rather to inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation. Ends with a Carl Sagen quote.

Comment: I appreciate that we got to see a few kids be today's (xkcd) Lucky 10,000, and a comment reminded me of the (xkcd) Average Familiarity problem. For example, recently I've been playing Just Dance, and I couldn't even categorize nearly any of the songs by decade, let alone identify performer and history or dance type or name any moves.

Tom Scott: Five YouTubers. Five games. $10,000. ⋮ Money: the full series (2021 Dec 27)

I invited Rohin from @MedlifeCrisis, Sophie from @SophsNotes, @MikeBoyd, Sam from @Wendoverproductions, and @MiaMulder to play some games. They'll be tempted by individual profit over group wealth, in an environment designed to slowly break their team apart. But all they knew is: they'd be sat around a table trying to win cash: over $10,000. This is a show about trust, about loyalty... and about Money.

Comment: I don't know any of these YouTubers except Tom, but it was highly engaging. This is a full hour of Prisoner's Dilemma and very fun to watch with a friend, pause, and comment on. The games are straightforward and nothing is harmful. Extra discussions on the meta-aspect of the game: these are YouTubers with their own followers and they know every move will be brought to light in this video -- how does knowing that there will be a revelation influence how we might behave in the face of temptation? Companion videos: What The Prisoner's Dilemma Reveals About Life, The Universe, and Everything (2023 Dec 23)

China has a multi-billion dollar gaming scene that you may well know nothing about. Let's change that! It's time we all talked about Jubensha.

Also on Nebula. Always fascinating to learn about something that's basically unknown here and huge somewhere else. Especially interesting to me how people show up to play with strangers.

A Drain Fly’s Happy Place Is Down Your Pipes | Deep Look

Ever wonder how those tiny, jumpy flies got onto your bathroom wall? Well, they came out of your sink drain after growing up down in the pipes. A goofy, long “mustache,” fuzzy wings and some aquabatics help them survive in that soggy environment.

I get these ugly little things in my shower stall all the damn time. Super annoying because, as shown in the video, they repel water and can skate along its surface, so you can't even use the shower head to spray them back down the drain like you can with other insects that show up in your shower/tub. And if you smush them they leave a hydrophobic powder behind that doesn't come off unless you scrub it. I always feel guilty even killing insects anyways though, so I typically just try my best to ignore them.

Modern Conflicts: The Yugoslav Wars (Nebula)

Modern Conflicts: The Yugoslav Wars (Nebula)

Throughout the 1990s, a devastating series of separate but connected wars were waged across the territory of the Western Balkans as the former state of Yugoslavia collapsed. The subsequent wars that were fought in the chaos of Yugoslavia's collapse were waged across Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Kosovo. More than 140,000 people were killed throughout these wars and millions more were forcibly displaced by the violence, which made them the most violent conflict fought in Europe since World War II at the time. This is the story of how Yugoslavia was created, why Yugoslavia collapsed in the early 1990s, and why the wars that followed were so monstrously catastrophic.

Recently watched Foraging Mussels / One of the most sustainable sources of animal based protein you can find by Seth Hughes. I follow this guy on TikTok and generally like his reserved, eco conscious attitude. Only found out he had a youtube by watching this video. In any case, even if you don't plan on foraging for mussels soon, I found this to be a nice watch.

Tom Nicholas: Vape-o-nomics: Why Everything is Addictive Now (35m31s)

Tom Nicholas: Vape-o-nomics: Why Everything is Addictive Now (35m31s)

Disposable vapes have taken over. In just two short years, Elf Bar, Lost Mary and their various competitors have become a ubiquitous part of modern life.

The popularity of these devices among children and young people has led many governments to ban (or consider banning) them. But, I want to look beyond the minutiae of vaping legislation and instead ask what it is about our society that has led these devices to prosper.

This video is the first in a three-part mini-series I'm working on which uses the rise of disposable vapes as a jumping-off point to explore various trends and tensions within contemporary capitalism.

In this first episode: we're looking at addiction, and how companies across our economy have begun to borrow tricks from the vaping industry to design consumer choice out of the system.
