Do you have any unnoticed/underrated youtube channel suggestions?

I'm sure there plenty of youtube channels that produce high quality content but they don't getting enough attention due to some other reasons.

Do you have any suggestion?

I'm a big fan of DIY science experiments, electronics projects, machine shop videos, and random sciencey and/or buildy stuff.

Some of the bigger channels I enjoy:

    • Cody'sLab - Minerology, geology, science demonstrations

    • AvE - Machining, materials science, tool teardowns

    • Applied Science - DIY electron microscope, DIY waterjet cutter, random science experiments

    • EEVBlog - Electronics teardowns, reviews, schematic design

    • Matthias Wandel - Woodworking projects

    • Tested - DIY build projects

    • NurdRage - Chemistry experiments

And some of the medium sized and smaller ones:

    • This Old Tony - Machining and fabricating. Good sense of humour, snappy editing.

    • Tubalcain - Machining, greybeard wisdom

    • Big Clive - Electronics teardowns, mostly cheap dollar store stuff.

    • Lara Kampf - DIY building and art projects

    • NileRed - Chemistry experiments

    • Clickspring - Machining porn, clockmaking, recreating ancient mechanical computers.

Small and obscure, needs more viewers:

I know I'm missing a bunch, I'll have to come back to this.

Edit: On reflection, I'm not sure why I listed so many big channels. My original intent I guess was to show the sort of genre of stuff I like, which I guess is a bit niche. Oh well, so hopefully if anyone's into that sort of thing, maybe you'll find a channel you didn't know about.

Oh shit I've had this comment typed for hours, forgot to hit "Post Comment."

SpoilerWarning, a channel that's historically been for let's plays but now also hosts their podcast. To me the main attraction is Errant Signal / Campster being present most of the time, they typically take a more thoughtful and analytical approach to their discussions that I really appreciate. Still, especially on the let's plays, it remains pretty casual so it's not like you need to be super heavily engaging with it to enjoy it. It's also nice having a place to go where I know there's not going to be transphobia and racism thrown all around the place. It's always hard to tell with gaming content what you're going to get.

I would love suggestions for little-known analysis / video essay channels. There's so many that go under the radar and I want to see all of them!

I used to be really into the anime video essay community (people like Digibro and BestGuyEver), and I still respect most of their work, but the racism, occasional transphobia, and pedophile apologism got to be too much for me. Kinda a long shot, but anyone else have this experience? What did you replace them with?

These are not little-known channels, but they're what I watch for video essays:

Every frame a painting, pop culture detective, and nerdwriter1 for media essays.

Wendover productions for geography and economic essays.

Daryl talks games for game essays. Also, extra credits, though I'm not sure if their content count as video essays.

exurb1a is hands-down, my favorite YouTube channel. He makes cheeky videos featuring existentialism and optimistic nihilism, and that's really my cup of tea.
He's made videos such as You (Probably) Don't Exist and Genocide Bingo, but if I had to recommend a single video it'd be Reality is an Episode of Good TV and We're All Silly Fucking Cats; I always get emotional with that one, because it speaks to some feelings deep inside me.

Another one of his that I like (first one I watched, so probably biased) is 10,000 More Years Of The Scientific Method or as I call it, 'The World Isn't Wizard Jizz'.

I'm big into YouTube critics but I find there really are only a few I actually like. Most tend to get too far into the "I don't like it, so it sucks" realm of criticism, or overstate their nitpicking a bit too much and wind up with an overly negative review.

Lindsay Ellis — one of the best film critics and essayists on YouTube who doesn't have any gimmick, just raw analysis. She used to be the Nostalgia Chick for ThatGuyWithGlasses' channel back in the day, and has all those videos available on her channel for archival purposes, even though she's rebranded since then. Her recent Hobbit series was great, the third part is basically investigative journalism too. Very talented person.

The Needle Drop — Anthony Fantano's music review channel. A large but reserved personality with a lot of deep, critical analysis of records. He rates from 1-10 but uses the full scale, and things getting an 8 or higher are always very good albums. Focuses mostly on metal, rap, pop, rock, and covers both major and upcoming artists.

Noah Gervais — honestly, video game critics are regularly such low quality that I don't even like most of the big names either, because they fall into the traps I outlined above almost all the time. Noah doesn't, though. His thing is long, abstract critiques that comment on what the game wants to be and wants to communicate, and how effectively they get that across. You won't find anything like him dismissing games entirely for having framedrops here. This is the closest thing I've found to someone critiquing games as art, not just a buying guide or technical showcase.

I love cook kafemaru who is an amateur cook in Japan. Sometimes she's a bit crap but I love how much effort she puts in and is getting better all the time. Her videos are really sweet and really calm.

Consolevania was once an actual TV show on the BBC but they're on YT now and despite being incredibly weird they do actually do good game reviews when they eventually get to doing that.

Mostly gaming related with some other content:

Razbuten is one of those channels that I have no idea how I stumbled upon. Production quality is fantastic and his writing is just superb, really interesting insights on video games and other topics.

DimeTree I found due to his "The Elder Scrolls Problem" series and while I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, he's got some decent funny commentary.

Gamechamp3000 is just a lot of fun, both his VG myths and Dumb Fun Gaming series are great.

Techmoan has a knack for doing fantastic videos on really odd products, like 90's ebook readers or vinyl video discs. He does a really good job of providing context for the hardware too, what the reaction was like at the time, what kind of content was available and how hard it was to produce, that kind of thing.

If you are into space exploration, then TMRO is great. It is run by the SpaceX media guy, but does not have any SpaceX bent at all. They only have 22k subs, which makes me sad. The hosts are unknown and great. They have weekly guests from astronauts to space entrepreneurs, etc. They also live stream their weekly recording process which can be fun and you can submit questions for them to ask their guests.

TMRO is a weekly live show about humanity's exploration of the cosmos. With a focus on human space flight we look at all of the new things happening on Earth and on orbit to help get the first boots on Mars.

This depends highly on the sort of things you want to subscribe to. There are tons of great niche channels, but you probably aren't interested in most of those hobby- or lifestyle-specific topics.

They probably aren't, but they won't be the only person reading this thread, so I think anything should go.
