I feel like this article should have come out 2 days from now. I'm sure this author has seen an early release of NOPE and might even have ticket sales numbers available to them. But for all we know the actual response to NOPE won't be so impressive. This is basically just a hype marketing piece, but the thesis is that Peele is now the Hollywood director, better than Tarantino and Spielberg, with only 2 films under his belt. With a thesis like that you'd think it reasonable to wait until the 3rd movie confirms the pattern in 2 days.

I hope he fares better because I quite like his work, but the level of hype around Peele because he came out swinging so hard on the first go around reminds me a lot of Shyamalan's hype around the time of Signs, when he himself was often compared to Spielberg, and...we all know how that went (though I'm a bit of a Shyamalan defender myself).

Shyamalan to me seems like a case of someone that fares better with less artistic freedom. I quite like both Signs and The Village, some of his more criticized films. But when he decided that he was going to be for film what Neil Gaiman was for comic books, it all fell apart. Not everyone can manage heavy symbolism, and Shyamalan kinda wanted to retell our essential myths and find the core of our primeval narratives. Become a mythical creator himself. He got greedy.

I know I’ll catch heat for this but I really enjoyed Lady In The Water. It really hit me in a way I hadn’t expected. Even after rewatching it, it still was compelling to me.

Peele has had more critical acclaim than Shyamalan had during his Sixth Sense/Unbreakable portion of his career (which was his highest in terms of critical acclaim). Granted the film critics of today are more open to celebrating genre films than the critics of the late 90s and early 00s.

Update: I saw the movie. It's pretty good in my opinion. But 3 movies is still too few for Peele to be the king of Hollywood.

It’s just pretty rare for a filmmaker to make original movies that both get critical acclaim and also make a dent at the box office. Tarantino is probably the last guy to get to that level (Spielberg’s reign at the box office has long been over and Scorsese never had that type of box office draw).

Out of the top 130 opening weekends of all time the only original movies on that list are Avatar and Us. Both of which were in the 70 million dollar range. Which is pretty impressive. And Nope is looking to at the very least be a moderate success scoring the highest opening weekend for an original film of the pandemic and also be the highest grossing R rated film of the pandemic (at least until Bullet Train and/or Halloween Ends beats it).
