It definitely launched Stanfield’s career, and it might have launched Malek’s, but Larson was already quite successful before this film having started in the industry as a child actor.
The film made a lot of noise in the film world at the time. It’s probably what led to Larson winning an Oscar three years later.
The director of the film hasn’t made anything interesting since though.
Brie Larson had also already been in Don Juan, The Spectacular Now, 21 Jump Street, Scott Pilgrim as actual breakout roles before this.
Shang-Chi was a bit interesting even if it was also more dumb. That seemed more like the studio's fault, though.
Speaking of Scott Pilgrim and Brie Larson, I just watched it again the other day, and it reminded me how good the Clash at Demonhead - Black Sheep cover is. I actually prefer it to the original.
p.s. My fav moment is the Thomas Jane and Clifton Collins Jr cameos. "Freeze, Vegan Police!" :P
Don Jon and Spectacular Now did come out after this. But yeah I was thinking about Scott Pilgrim (I actually forgot she was in Jump Street).
The Director went the sell out route really. I mean he did make a mid budget drama but it wasn’t anything notable. I get you gotta pay the bills, but he could have had a more special career if he chose different projects.
It’d be like if The Daniels decided to start making more generic, less stylized, stuff after the noise Swiss Army Man made in the indie world.
Changed the title as it's pretty bad clickbait and doesn't do this very good article justice. And yes that "le hidden gem" line is a bit of a meme but it is true!
This movie is everything. I am entirely unable to give an objective review as it is my #1 favorite movie if I had to pick just one. It is just the most heartfelt and wholesome and tragic movie. Everyone should watch it.
It's a good movie. I wonder if in few years it'll achieve the true hidden gem status à la Moon.
It was a fine and unmemorable film for me, but it had an undeniable raw power brought about by Brie Larson's acting. I remember being in awe of her acting and was looking forward to her future work but her career took a path I'm not necessarily interested in and more power to her.
Room was really the last time she did a project that showed her chops. I suppose she lost interest after she had won an Oscar in her mid 20s though. I guess, maybe, she wants to be an action star while she’s still young and go back to more interesting work once she’s older.
