If anyone is really wanting to watch a spiritual successor of The Abyss with a massive dash of Alien to tide you over until this come out, you need to check out Underwater (2020) starring Kristen Stewart, it's truly fantastic and imo might be better than The Abyss conceptually (and I love The Abyss).
I really enjoyed it too. It’s the closest to The Abyss that I’ve seen any movie come. The outside exploration scenes are so tense…they reminded me a lot of the spacewalk scene from 2010.

A Scottish oil rig in the North Sea is enveloped in an unnatural fog that cuts them off from outside communications. Spores found in the fog cause infected crew members to experience behavioural changes. After examining the spores, a scientist onboard the oil rig suspects that [redacted due to spoilers].
Season 2 was greenlit and is set to go into production any time now.

It’s basically been finished for three or four years and just sitting on a shelf because James Cameron was too busy with Avatar 2/3 to give his final approval.
I really really hope this will become available on physical media, hopefully with the theatrical cut included, but I'm bracing myself for disappointment.

And you're in luck, because The Abyss Blu-ray will supposedly also include the Theatrical cut as well:

Not who you asked, but a lot of people seem to really dislike the Special Edition... mostly because of the extended ending, I suspect. I personally prefer it to the theatrical cut, but to each...

Ending Spoilers
In the theatrical cut, Bud (Ed Harris) is rescued by the NTIs (Non-Terrestrial Intelligence) after diffusing the nuclear bomb, is taken aboard their ship, and shown his final message to Lindsey where he explained that he knew it was a one-way trip and says he loves her. Then the NTIs take Bud and the Deep Core with the rest of the crew safely back to the surface.
However, in the special edition, Bud is similarly rescued after diffusing the bomb, and taken aboard an NTI ship. But he is instead shown footage of gigantic tsunami waves all around the world which are set to wipe out human civilization. Bud realizes it's the NTIs doing, since they can control water, and asks them why they're doing it. The NTIs then show Bud footage of a nuclear explosion. Bud asks them how they can judge all of humankind for that, and in response is shown footage of other human atrocities and war crimes. But despite that, the waves suddenly freeze in place, and then retreat back into the ocean. When Bud asks them why they didn't wipe humanity out, his final message to Lindsey is played. Bud and the Deep Core + crew are then brought back to the surface.
So the special edition ending is way more on-the-nose and preachy, which I think is why so many people dislike it. But I prefer it, since I also found it a lot more hopeful too. With the threat of extinction looming over us coming from a powerful species also living on Earth, who are clearly monitoring our actions and disapprove of them, maybe humanity would have stopped being such horrible shits after that. If only that were the case in real life. :(

FINALLY! I’ve been waiting on Aliens getting a 4k remaster! So excited. Might have to pick up all 3 of these…
Oh my goodness that is good news!
I will be voting with my wallet and adding both the abyss and aliens to my non delete-able, physical collection.
interesting that the english audio is stereo but the french and spanish audio are surround.
That's surround sound, isn't it?
Somehow I missed that in the list, I blame dyslexia
Oooh pumped for this! It hasn’t been available to stream anywhere in Aus for quite a while.

What don't you like about this one, out of curiosity?
