Easily best superhero movie of the year. Top-notch score and fantastic characterbuilding. For the first time, they felt like genuine teenagers having genuine teenager interactions. It was humourous and playful. But also serious and dark.

The animation was novel, the closest I've seen is Aeon Flux. It had this visceral gritty realism while remaining cartoonishly animated, sharing the vibe with the intense enthusiasm of a child burning through the latest issue of their favorite comic.

Pair that with fantastic pacing, I personally rank it above all the Avengers movies, not just this year's Marvel fare.

I’m admittedly tired of "Awards bait", and have watched less movies in general. But I thought TMNT was easily the best film I’d seen in years. It was pretty emotionally layered all around, not just the turtles. It was complex without becoming overly complicated, which kept me emotionally engaged without struggling to understand what they were trying to depict. I think I had cried in the theatre, haha. And it was fun to watch. And funny. And like you said, the turtles seemed authentically like kids, to the point that they were annoying (but in a cute way).

Having rewatched a fair bit of OG Turtles cartoons in the wake of taking my kid, they were always annoying but endearing, so they were never too far from the mark :)

That sounds like a great film but as a non TMNT fan I have to admit that's what's stopping me. I should probably get over it though because story and animation are things I care deeply about.

Seriously, top of your list then. The extended first fight sequence clip gives a pretty good overview of the movie's vibe.

Critics Choice aren’t really critics and the way to know this is that Zone of Interest and May December (favorites of actual critics) didn’t make Picture here. But a cult favorite like Saltburn did.
