I'm surprisingly way more excited than this than I thought. I wasn't really a musical person before Wicked Part 1, and I didn't even see it in theatres, but there's just something about it that has been affecting my life recently. Before this, I only watched Hamilton, and now I've seen Hadestown at West End, am debating on seeing it again on Broadway, and am going to see Cabaret on Broadway with the SO! There's just something about musicals right now that are just so good.

Part of the magic is the distillation of emotion and experience into sound and movement in a way that bypasses your forebrain to some degree. It's raw and vivid when it's done well and the emotional experience is powerful but also sort of uncomplicated and unburdened. Uncynical is maybe a way to put it.

In contrast to the experience of the current political realities which are anything but unburdened.

I’m not into musicals, but my wife loved Wicked. Another one she loves is Greatest Showman, so that might be one for you to check out, too

Oh! I did watch Greatest Showman, I didn't like it as much actually. I guess I also watched Les Mis now that I think about it, which I liked a bit better but I wasn't super excited about musicals...

I would understand if you were unenthusiastic for the movie version of Les Misérables. It was made by the guy who would move on to give us Cats.

I was reminded how long it is though. Wife and I got home late and crashed hard haha. The whole cast sounded terrific, and the Kennedy Center orchestra is always great.

I'm still irritated that the local movie theater had three performances scheduled: At 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm — they completely missed the chance to make it 6:01pm. Idiots! :)

The live singing is one of the things I think the movie does better than others. And while it’s nowhere near as bad as Cats, I still wouldn’t call it a good movie. The worst thing about the movie is simply that it’s not as good as the musical or even just listening to a soundtrack.

I loved The Greatest Showman. Didnt know anything about it til I stumbled across it and was spellbound by the songs.

And then I saw the original read through where Hugh Jackman got a very nervous Keala Settle to sing the anthemic "This Is Me" as she came out from behind her music stand for the first time. Its very inspiring and probably my favorite video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-e8ZJBzw8Y&t=2s

There's a moment where Keala just comes in her own at 2:22, taking her energy from one of the background singers and they all just 'go to church' on the song. Its brilliant. And Jackman's obviously moved with his quiet but emotional "huh" at 4:08.

The background story that makes it poignant is that Keala didnt think she could do this musical, had very little confidence and Jackman convinced her that the part was made for her. And she obviously nailed it. Some quotes from an interview:

“It’s funny because I’ve always been hiding from it,” Settle tells Billboard. “I’ve been hiding from whatever this is — my entire life. There were pockets of this career — whatever you want to call it — where I said ‘I’ve tapped out, I don’t want to do this, I’m gonna go be a stage hand. I don’t want to do this. I don’t want to talk to people. I’m afraid of people. I’m going to walk away from everything that this was and is.’

“The last time that I tried to do that was with Hugh Jackman (the star of The Greatest Showman)” on the set of the film.” Settle says they had filmed her big “This Is Me” sequence in the film, with Jackman and other cast and crew watching, and at the end of the number “everyone was bawling and crying, and I was like ‘is everybody OK?’”

The performance moved Jackman so much, that the next day, he came up to Settle and told her “you have changed the course of what’s about to happen in this film.”

Settle, laughing, says she responded with, “So? What does that have to do with me? Because I’m running away after this film opens.” She says Jackman said, “‘You won’t be able to. I need you to know that if you can make a choice. You can go pull a Greta Garbo and run away and do that if you want, or trust me and know that I will have your back, non-stop, until you’re in the ground, six feet under, and that my family will have your back, non-stop, until you’re six feet under in the ground. Trust me that you can ride this through.’”

Settle says, “And I said — And I still do to this day, every day, that’s why I blame him every day, it’s his fault — and I said ‘OK I trust you, I trust you.’”

I'm not sure I'm ready for the emotional damage of this movie. It doesn't help that I miss being involved in theatre very dearly. heh.

The book is up thete as one of my favorites, and I absolutely abhor the musicals and movies. They are so radically different and nowhere near as good. The book is dark, philosophical, purposefully bends the world of Oz, and the musical is just used as a Wizard of Oz prequel, tone and all. Drives me crazy.

But, there is something for everyone I suppose.
