My friend and I (once MCU fans, now busy with other things) are utterly confused about what's happening. They are just shoehorning old characters back to the spotlight and it reeks of desperation. Reusing old soundtrack motifs from the Infinity War trailer. Implying that the past 5 years of MCU slop (with a few exceptions) haven't happened. It just feels directionless.

I think if they wanted to go back to the old formula, they'd need to be very self aware and lampshade it a bit. The promo would need to answer the question "why are these people back after very clearly saying farewell to the camera?" and not try to answer it in a way that takes itself too seriously.

This teaser, the captain America one, or even going back to the awkward reveal Robert Downey Junior did when he announced his role. It's almost pretentious, like just telling me that these characters are returning is supposed to impress me.

The other thing is that the whole vibe is very dramatic, which worked at the end of a major arc of movies. But now? Teary dramatic monologues without any plot hints are a miss for me. It's not charming me.

I'm not really sure what way this could work for me. The Deadpool "Till you're 90!" joke just isn't that funny to me when it's not really a joke.

I’ve kept up with the movies (not the shows) and I can tell you none of us know what’s going on either

I feel like I'm the only one unperturbed by these haha. "Calling upon the old guard" is like a classic franchise trope, even more common in comic books than other media. Also, I love Chris Evans' Cap, and am genuinely very excited to see him coming back!

It's possible that this movie will be a dumpster fire, obviously, but these teasers have so far just felt like drumming up excitement for a big movie by being like "that's right, your favorites will be there, too!" They don't need to do this for the Thunderbolts or FF4, because there were teasers for Doomsday already in those movies' credits scenes.

I dunno, maybe I'm just a dummy but this marketing is working for me haha

No, that's a very valid take. My comment above is critical, but I neglected to mention that I shamelessly would enjoy seeing all of the OGs back. I'm not one for torch passing in film. I do hope...

Click to view the hidden text The movie is likely about Dr. Doom kidnapping the children of various powerful people (some from different time periods), extorting those parents, and bending them to his will. I don't quite remember the comic the movie is based off of, but it might be a combination of things. I think in one Dr. Doom has them compete in a gladiatorial tournament or something.

But man if you liked the MCU up to Endgame, the Russos were very consistently delivering some of its best movies. I don't see why they'd suddenly be terrible at it.

And as much as people like to point to the importance of the ten year buildup, the actual plot buildup was little more than a vague "Thanos wants the infinity stones" which was mostly confined to a handful of short, ominous scenes (many of them post-credits...). The real build-up was all the great character work that they could lean on once the story actually kicked off in Infinity War.

Post-Endgame MCU films fumbled this aspect horribly. There have been a handful of good films, but there have been no anchors like we had with Tony/Steve, I struggle to think of many characters that have even appeared more than once.

So given the state of things, reaching back into the bag for beloved characters and making this a direct continuation of Endgame makes a lot of sense. I doubt it will hit the same highs of the previous two Avengers movies, but the Russos have yet to do anything to make me believe that they forgot how to make a good Marvel flick. And I'm genuinely excited to see what they do with the X-Men -- that's an absolute treasure trove of great, established characters that they get to tap into this time around.
