I guess the answer was "not that long". It seems like a great service but it also look like it's losing money incredibly fast.

Almost the entire tech industry is like this, it's bizarre. There are very few companies that actually make any money.

It seems like it's basically enterprise-level gambling by people who don't fully understand what they're gambling on. It's like the 90s dotcom bubble all over again! That's a good article too.

I thought Moviepass was rather unique in it's complete lack of value proposition other than "cheaper stuff funded by VC money"

It was very strange, at least things like twitter generate massive amounts of user data.

The profitability comes when you hit enough market saturation where the subscribers who barely use the service even out the power users. MoviePass was trying to draw out their life as long as possible to attract subscribers, and this is the braking point. It was an unrealistic goal from the start.

As a new parent, there's been no reason for me to get MoviePass (I can barely get out of the house as is). I knew I'd be missing their short run of "giving away free money" because it was only going to last so long.

This Bloomberg article has a bit more detail on the loan, seems like a pretty desperate one:

Terms of the loan are onerous. Investment firm Hudson Bay Capital Management can demand repayment of more than $3 million of the loan on Aug. 1, and the rest on Aug. 5. Proceeds from a planned stock sale must also be used to repay the debt.

If Helios and Matheson Analytics fails to pay, it will be subject to a 15 percent annualized late fee until it makes good on the obligation. If the company is 48 hours late in its payment, Hudson Bay can require the company to repay the debt at 130 percent.

Also worth noting that MoviePass's parent company just did a "reverse stock split" on Tuesday because their share price had fallen so low that they were risking being de-listed from the NASDAQ. That reverse split converted every 250 shares (worth 8.5 cents each) into one $21.25 share. Since then, the stock price has fallen to $2.80, so they're down almost 90% more in the last 3 days.

I’m a Cinemark movie club member and I love it. It’s one “free” movie per month (the cost of the monthly membership fee is the price you pay for movies). I’m addition to that, you get 20% off concessions and you can buy up to two tickets a day for the discounted price ($8.99). It’s been a great program for my wife and me. We usually see a movie at least once a week.

Update: Looks like they're allowing users to see MI6 now. $6.00 surge though at my local theater.

Update 2: It was blocked again when I went to try and pick up a ticket early at the theater. So I'm "seeing" Equalizer 2. Gonna cancel my subscription in lieu of a ticket verification.
