Also not a fan of the signalling toward more OT worship. TLJ did the best at toning the worship down so far, but for as much as I love them (except Solo, which I have no opinion on because I avoided it...the concept bothered me), all of the new movies have a serious fanservice problem. I'd think everyone would be tired of that by now, but the whole idea of shoving in Palpatine like this shows to me that Disney doesn't think so.
I dunno, the series can "rhyme" without bringing back the same (conveniently marketable and fan-pleasing) faces again and again. The core themes of Star Wars about balance, forgiveness,...

The core themes of Star Wars about balance, forgiveness, authoritarianism, fluidity, etc. are all plenty doable with any number of characters and situations. I want them to stay true to the soul of Star Wars, but at this point they're sticking so close that it just feels icky.
It's such a rich setting for new stories! There's so much to do! At this point I wish there were no familiar characters at all, not because I think they're ruining them (they're not! I like Luke 10x more than I ever did!) but because they need a kick in the ass to define the new movies as their own thing. Treat Star Wars as a setting, not a series!

Yeah I agree with all this. The Revan saga in Knights of the Old Republic is probably the strongest Star Wars story since the original trilogy.
I didn’t mind the repetitiousness of image themes in Force Awakens, but I’m disappointed that this seems to be the intention moving forward. It was good to reinvigorate the series, but they need to expand. The willful subversion of all of it in Last Jedi was a great direction even if it had some issues in execution. But rolling back to being repetitive after shaking things up seems even more discordant than it would have been otherwise.
I'm kind of hoping they borrow from the Dark Empire comic books and return Palpatine as a clone. IMO this would be one of the best ways to bring Palpatine back and not have it feel totally cheep.

Also, how come we believe Kylo Ren when he claims Rey's parents were nobodies? First of all; how would he know that? And second; even if he somehow knows who her parents are, why would he tell her the truth?

I will say though, there's enough established lore in Star Wars to bring back the emperor without time travel. Force ghosts are obviously a thing, and there's a bunch of crazy stuff that happened with ancient sith from the old republic era possessing people and being brought back to life. The canonicity of much of that is questionable at this point, but it's still there.

I generally don't like RLM too much, at least as critics, but time travel is not the most outlandish theory I've heard about Episode 9. Patrick Willems did a video on JJ Abrams and trying to analyze his work and its meaning by looking back at one of his early projects, the show Felicity. His justification for why there could be time travel is a minor point at the very end played almost as a joke, but combined with the commentary in the rest of the video I think it manages to give an interesting perspectice on why a JJ Abrams Star Wars movie might actually involve time travel. Time travel is used as a tool of retrospection in Felicity, as a point of looking back on choices and understanding the value of already made decisions, but the show goes too oulandishly literal with it, making it literal time travel instead of something like just ideas of what could have been. I think minor time travel, or at least visions of past choices and their effects, wouldn't be the worst path to take in terms of storytelling, but I think Abrams is too blunt for that in a lot of his work. I also think the Emperor coming back in general is monumentally stupid on the very face of it though.
Willems also likes Abrams much more than I do, but I think he still manages to highlight why I dislike so much of his work. It's a lot of young people rebelling against systems and trying to understand their place in the world, but he never really says anything of substance about those systems. As a casual Star Wars fan who really liked Last Jedi, the prospect of a JJ Abrams written sequel to it seems like it'll take a miracle for me to not be wildly disappointed by it.
As for Rey's parents being nobodies, Kylo Ren doesn't actually say it, Rey does. It's her own introspection that leads to an understanding and abandonment of her previous quest to find her parents and finally accept the importance she placed on said quest wasn't inherent but placed by her. It's possible it's undone in the sequel but I think it would be a monumentally stupid decision to do so. I don't think Abrams was setting up a big reveal of her parents in the first place, Force Awakens also seems to be about an abandoned quest to belong where one is "supposed" to in favor of learning to belong where Rey never thought she would, a Jedi and a member of the Resistance. If it's undone, I don't think it'll be because Abrams had a different vision than Johnson, it'll be because of fan appeasement.
At least DJ most likely won't be followed up on because he was disliked, so that idea from Last Jedi might just escape unscathed.

That's exactly what I felt when I saw the second death star at the original screening of Return of the Jedi.
