I'd never heard of Caroline Polachek before, but I really really dig her voice. She somehow managed to make her vocals sound like they were synthesized or being electronically distorted at various points, with her intonation, warbling/rapid pitch shifting, and almost overtone-like singing + humming. I loved the breathy moments too. She very much reminds me of Imogen Heap (who I adore), and she even managed to make some similar sounding vocal effects as Imogen often uses... but without needing to use electronics like Imogen does. Really impressive stuff!

If you haven't yet, go check out her prior work as part of Chairlift, it's where I fell in love with her sound. You'll probably recognize Bruises from a late-aughts iPod commercial, or I Belong in Your Arms from Heartstopper. Amanaemonesia is another earlier track worth checking out. I'm still partial to their last album Moth, especially Polymorphing, Crying in Public, Romeo, and Moth to the Flame.

Polachek is just a fantastic musician all around.

I really enjoyed Chairlift and one of my favorite show was seeing them live right before they disbanded. Looking back, that really did feel like the finals days of the “indie” music from the early aughts.

I enjoyed every one of those tracks, and a bunch more that showed up in autoplay. So I guess I'm a Chairlift fan now too... although sadly quite late to the party. :( Thanks for sharing those...

Thanks for sharing! I first learned about Caroline Polachek from her feature on the La vita nuova track on the EP of the same name by Christine and the Queens and have followed her loosely since. I think she's great.

Weirdly enough, my partner was familiar with this cover of So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings (worth a listen, IMO - has some variants that I think are pretty good) and only found out it was a cover a few weeks ago. We had been bingeing our favourite music videos and I mentioned that I liked Polachek offhandedly after watching La vita nuova together (link timestamped to the track in which she appears) and I was surprised she wasn't already familiar - when she listened to the original it became a fast favourite. One of the very few times my more-trendy wife learned about an artist from me, hah.

Wow, very good! Great talent there to have such a good live sound. Her backup singers are very talented as well.. I mean the whole band is too.

So I just went down a whole Chairlift rabbit hole which ended in an unexpected appearance by another band I like: Great Good Fine Ok - I Belong In Your Arms
