Has anyone listened to ye?
Are there any fans of Kanye West here? Kanye just released ye and I'm really liking it. My favourite song is probably Ghost Town, the vocals and production on that track are amazing imho. What are your thoughts?
I've listened to it twice. Not sure if I'll go back anytime soon. Compared to what he's done on previous albums, It feels like an extremely mediocre effort as far as lyrics, flow, and production goes.
Definitely has a few sonically interesting parts here and there but I'm not really feeling it as a whole.
Agreed. I'm a big fan of his newer stuff but this just felt like minimal effort on his part. I'm really starting to believe the whole Kanye West as Andy Kauffman theory.
Have you listened to Life of Pablo? If so, would you say that is the better album? I'm still undecided
Yeah I think so. That's my 2nd least favorite of his albums and for me it suffers from a lot of the same things as this one. Makes me sad to think that maybe we've just grown apart :(
Rip. I guess we'll have to wait for Kids See Ghost then, although I haven't listened to that much Kid Cudi that much, so I'm not that sure if i'll like it haha
I'm really not a fan, after 4 listens or so. I'll probably listen to it some more just because it's Kanye and I want to believe there's something of worth in there, but so far every listen has made it worse and worse.
What's interesting to me is that most people who disliked this also disliked Pablo, which I thought was every bit as good as any other Kanye album. To me that has so much heart + soul that ye doesn't have an ounce of. Between this and Daytona being huge disappointments, I can't help but think Kanye has just moved in a bad direction that I see little to no value in.
What did you not like about Daytona? I haven't stopped bumping it since it came out. The Kanye's production and Pusha's flow are both amazing. The lyrics are the usual Pusha tho, so I could see it being criticized for that, but I think he managed to keep it refreshing anyways.
Kanye's production both felt super flat and unfitting of Push, other than Hard Piano which totally sounds like something he should be on. Pusha T is a good rapper and he wasn't really underperforming or anything, but unless he's at his absolute peak, he can't carry tracks with mediocre or weak beats.
Ghost Town is so good. The album as a whole is really enjoyable for me at least. Good thing I was introduced to his great music recently by a great friend of mine named Steph!
I have mixed feelings. I loved every Kanye album so far. I am not listening to this as much as I did to the others when I first heard them, though. I agree ghost town is good. I am also sad the album is too short. But then again my dear melancholy, by the weekend was super good as well even though it was short
I feel the same when it comes to the overall length of the album as it is more of an LP release than a full 'album', but you can tell he put so much love into those beats, and given he's producing like 4 other albums all at once I don't mind. Kid Cudi album on the horizon, too!
Ghost Town is great but overall the album was pretty disappointing to me. It's not bad , just I would've hoped for more out of the guy who created The College Dropout and MBDTF
Do you think you're not a fan of the album because you enjoy MBDTF style Kanye, but it has merit on it's own? Or do you just not like it in general, regardless of artist?
The production is uncanny. I found myself appreciating his music much more when I listen on a good pair of headphones and not a car stereo or a boombox or something. I'm a huge Kanye fan, but honestly I wasn't that big of a fan until TLOP, then I went back and binged everything. Despite some of the comments he may make and all the stuff he may be going through I see him grow not only as a person but as a fantastic artist.
Same :) I haven't really gotten into his older stuff that much, apart from a few songs here and there - but TLOP is probably one of my top 10 albums.
Agreed! If you'd like to go back, I really enjoy Graduation, MBDTF, and College Dropout.
I hated the album until fantano gave it that 8, I love it now.
All jokes aside its been growing on me since my first listen. The production on it is really, really good, especially when listened to with a good pair of headphones like @toaster said. I think that it's Kanye being as raw as he was on MBDTF. I just don't agree with a lot of the criticism of it so far.
Haha, just saw the review. I thought it was pretty fair, I agree the album could have been a bit longer :)
I think it could have been longer, but I'm liking the trend GOOD Music has been on with the short albums. It keeps there from being a bunch of filler songs; my main complaint with TLOP and many other hiphop albums these days.
What songs would you say were filler on TLOP?
Fade, Silver Surfer Intermission, Real Friends, Freestyle 4, I Love Kanye (like the song but its not something I would have put on an album). I'd have to listen to it again to find the rest, but I don't like it enough to do this.
I haven’t seen melon’s review yet but part of me feels like he’s a bit of a contrarian when it comes to Kanye. The more popular a Kanye album, the less he likes it.
He always has solid critiques so I’m certainly not gonna argue with his opinion.
Wish I would have gotten the invite for the listening party. Totally would have made the drive to bump elbows with 2 chainz.
Same here! I'm pretty sure one of the reddit admins was actually there, he posted something on /r/Kanye iirc
Not my favourite album of his, but I really loved All Mine. The chorus is so good, I could listen to it a million times.
None of the other tracks really stick out to me though.
