The aesthetic, flawless. I won’t deny that. Actually, the composition is pretty good too. I’ll give credit to that as well.

I just have a real hard time with the sound of auto tune artifact. How will this stuff age? It’s so stylized, you can’t really throw it into a “top hits” playlist and forget about it once that sound stops being trendy.

Then again, I still listen to boys in eyeliner scream-whining about their feelings on the regular. I’ll take my walker and put myself to bed now, thanks for letting me yell at the clouds for a moment.

Edit: y’all I am a hypocrite. I love bring me the horizon’s newest album POST HUMAN: NeX GEn and it has quite a bit of autotune artifact.

T-pain was using auto tune twenty years ago, which should be around the time that you were listening to the emo stuff

On the topic of T-pain, his tiny-desk concert without the autotune was so soooo good. I recognize that there is a lot of talent in some of the artists who use this style. I just prefer without. But of course, that’s just my opinion and that doesn’t make it superior to other folks who see it differently :)

If you're referring to Graduation and/or The College Dropout, both of those were well-received at the time. Perhaps it was just the circle you were in that didn't like them.

He may have also meant 808s which I think was his first (and most ever) aggressively autotuned album. But like the ones you mentioned, it was very well received and I'd say much of modern rap/hiphop and even this posted song share many commonalities with that album.

P.S. I've decided it's almost time to start listening to Kanye again. Hoping I enjoy it for the art and can put the artist out of mind.

Even ignoring his meltdowns I don’t think any of Kanye’s music has been good since The Life of Pablo, which was around the time Kardashian divorced him.

"Ye," the album after that, released in 2018, was pretty good. But that's the last album of his that I listened to. And I don't listen to him much anymore since he's gone off the deep end. And then some. Not really relevant, but I think they didn't get divorced until 2020-2022. "The Life of Pablo" -- which I loved -- was released in 2016.

But back to this song at hand. I've tried listen to Charli xcx before and couldn't get into her. But this one is pretty good. Thanks for posting!

As for XCX, I really liked her song Boom Clap which came out when I was in high school. But I didn’t really listen to her until last year with Brat.

When he put out HH earlier this month, that was the nail in the coffin.

Well that's certainly beyond redeemable. Hmmm maybe back to my original stance of waiting for him to die and then re-evaluating.

            @TommyTentoes was correct, I was speaking of 808, but I am a she* 😘

That statement that I made was a sloppy regurgitation from what I have previously read from outside sources analyzing the cultural impact of album.

Critically the album divided the hip hop audience, as most of his elder fanbase could not connect to singing and autotune using Kanye. Although it did not resonate with his older fans, his younger fan base connected to the vulnerability shown by West in his songs.

808’s & Heartbreak would go on to create a new template for hip hop and pop culture that endures more than a decade later. In a 2013 interview with the New York Times, Kanye claimed that the album redefined the sound of radio. The album made waves.

Juice WRLD and Lil Uzi Vert would not be where they are today without that groundbreaking album.

In all fairness if I was going to recycle an opinion I could have worded it more eloquently.

If you liked his Tiny Desk Concert try him at the Sun Rose, it's a fantastic session.

Of course, that sound is not always autotune. Caroline Polachek, who has worked with Charlie XCX quite a bit and is rightfully pretty influential in her own right, can somehow just sing like that (I highly recommend that Tiny Desk btw, it's absolutely "top hit" worthy)

I see autotune the same way as I see pedals. It's just a tool that modulates the instrument, whether it's for pitch correction or artistic effect. I don't personally care if artists use autotune to sharpen their pitch, they're still creating music. I use spellcheck when I write papers, it's just another tool to make sure the product comes out the way you intend it to.

do you do drugs? If so, do some drugs and lay back and listen to BRAT with good headphones. I hate pop music, but this record is immaculate and the themes are fantastic. It isn't parody, but its an absolutely self-aware record akin to Paris Hilton's first record. It doesnt take itself too seriously while, like I said, speaking to her state in the pop industry as a thirty year old.

Anyway, I thought it was going to be absolute trash, but it was getting so much great press, so I gave it a whirl. It later went to top most respectable year end lists. Also, Everything is Romantic was produced by El Guincho, who is one of my favorites, so it was another point for Charli.

Ultimately, give it a listen and open your mind :) Go in order, no skips, too.

It sounds like you get it to some extent (good composition & aesthetic) . One thing to realize is that people in their early 20's have been listening to music they really like for what?, 5-6 years (starting from teenage years). So to them many things will sounds fresh and exciting, even though if you take a longer perspective on music history it's maybe not so fresh or exciting. That's what going on with all these waves of older "retro" styles coming back I think.

if you’re sensitive to flashing, the start of this is bad for about 30s. smart that she’s doing videos for older songs. BRAT is s a perfect record and i doubt she’ll ever top it.
