What are some of your favorite albums that have less than a 3.00 on rateyourmusic?
I don't put a ton of stock in rateyourmusic's numbers, but I do think it's fun to check in every once in a while to see how my tastes line up with the votes from the userbase. Occasionally I'll find an album I love that, for whatever reason, has a particularly low score.
For example, I was listening to Something to Die For by The Sounds and was surprised to see that it has a 2.88 rating. I love pretty much all of The Sounds' output, and everything else of theirs was well-received by the site. This album, however, was not.
The same goes for Glasvegas's Euphoric Heartbreak which sits at 2.93. Granted, the title is terrible (it has unnecessary slashes that I couldn't figure out how to format right), and it strays from their debut, but I still thoroughly enjoy it.
What are some of your low-rated favorites?
EDIT: If you've never used rym, you can search for any artist in the search field on the top right. That will pull up a list of all artists with that name (or a similar name). Select your desired artist from the list and you'll be taken to their discography page which will show the average rating for each release, as well as the number of ratings and reviews.
One that I was surprised to see below a 3/5 was the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium with a 2.96; SA doesn't have the sound of their earlier 80–90's work, but it has quite a few tracks I consider quintessential RHCP and overall one of their better albums. Although their albums are rated from 2.55–3.64—so I can live with that—but Rolling Stone gave it 4/5 and named it the second-best album of 2006, which I like better 😁
alt-J's RELAXER got a 2.82/5, which is a veritable crime and objectively wrong.
Other than that I'm mostly feeling pretty validated in my tastes. There are a few pretty low rated albums I thought about tacking on here, but mostly just because I just really, really dig one specific song and haven't given the full album a proper listen.
Updated. Thanks for the tip.
Also I'm not sure if you helped update my tags, but if you did, thank you for that as well!
Don't really have a lot of real favorites that fit the <3.0 criteria sadly, but a lot of stuff around 3.2-3.0. I'll drop some stuff I like that is not over 3.0, though.
Travis Scott - Bird in the Trap Sing McKnight - It's not Rodeo but it's still a fun collection of Travis songs.
The Carters - Everything is Love - It's fun. It's not something that's incredibly new or mindblowing, but Beyonce delivers on her stuff and Jay-Z does well enough.
Deerhunter - Turn it Up (slur) - No, the band isn't homophobic, they just made the poor decision of taking what someone yelled at them during a live show and made it an album title. It's noisier and way more post-punk influenced than the other Deerhunter I've heard, which is more my speed.
I was kind of expecting that most of the music I listen to wouldn't even be listed, but I was pleasantly surprised! It's got foreign and indie music, but it still doesn't have everything.
I wrote about it in an earlier thread, but Yorlga is a must listen album if you are a fan of Yoshitaka Hirota or Noriko Mitose. It's much less experimental sounding but it combines harmonics in ways that are still pretty novel.
Yay, RYM-related topics!
The first couple that come to mind are Signor Benedick the Moor's recent projects MNFST.dstnii (2.91) and CYBR.pnk (1.62) which are both incredible experimental hip hop releases that rank up there with Atrocity Exhibition and the various Death Grips projects as the best things happening in that space lately. I understand that they're a tough pill to swallow coming from his more popular and traditionally lyrical work, but jesus christ I love them so much more. I hope everyone comes around to these eventually.
A lot of my music seems to be hovering around 3 and lower.
Here's the one I searched for: Krafty Kuts - Let's ride
Against Me! - White Crosses
How DARE they.
nah though basically everyone hated that album which makes me sad 'cos it was fantastic. Also,
Trophy Eyes - The American Dream.
Less so for this one because their sound did take a dive but lyrically barring the singles it was great.
How DARE they, indeed!
I loved White Crosses and agree with you--it really is fantastic. And it has the best closing track. Worth over 3.00 for Bamboo Bones alone!
Right?! Bamboo Bones and Ache with Me are two top-ten AM! tracks yet I can't find a single AM! fan that likes them.
Wow, that's heartbreaking. Ache With Me is beautiful, and Bamboo Bones is triumphant!
Bamboo Bones and The Ocean (from New Wave) are my two favorites because of how resonant they are now that Laura has transitioned. There were fantastic songs on their own, but knowing now the depth of their relevance makes them all the greater.
I think Violence is my top track, personally; either it or Paralytic States. They're absolute masterpieces; like the majority of the AM! catalogue.
I listen mostly to excellent music but I found two:

Which is a little surprising since the production is excellent and it's musically way above average, a bit too experimental maybe.
Second one is:

Which is a quite original album, but it's very rough and somewhat strange, not their best admittedly:
