What are your top ten favorite albums this year?
Mine, in no particular order:
Daughters "You Won't Get What You Want"
Bosse-de-nage "Further Still"
Lush "Snail Mail"
Uniform "The Long Walk"
Rolo Tomassi "Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It"
Frontierer "Unloved"
Rival Consoles "Persona"
Ken Mode "Loved"
Portal "Ion"
Janelle Monáe "Dirty Computer"
honorable mentions to "Twin Fantasy" by Car Seat Headrest (not really a new album), "Year of the Snitch" by Death Grips, "Ordinary Corrupt Human Love" by Deafheaven, and "Heartless" by Pallbearer.
Since I frequent a music forum in which I've already made a top 20, I'll share that here as well:
What forum is that, if you don't mind sharing?
But really, I stop feeling too strongly about them halfway through even this list. I got burnt out not too long after I hit 100 2018 releases because so little was really hitting for me, and artists I care about all underperformed.
Major props for Streams of Thought, hip hop community been sleeping HARD on it and I feel like I'm fucking alone. Also major props for Haru to Shura!!
Also in no particular order (but top 3 have *)
Actually, looking back, this was one of my favorite years in hip hop in nearly over a decade.
+1 for Elephant Gym. Underwater isn't my favorite of their records, but it's still very good. Also adding Noname- Room 25 to the list of phenomenal hip hop albums this year.
In no particular order, and not complete yet (going to fill it out over the course of the day, because I've not decided yet entirely.)
Tancred—Nightstand
Antarctigo Vespucci—Love in the Time of E-Mail
Frog—Whatever We Probably Already Had It
Jeff Rosenstock—POST-
Waterparks—Entertainment
Tokyo Police Club—TPC
Speak Low If You Speak Love—Nearsighted
Trophy Eyes—The American Dream
Owl City—Cinematic
The Wonder Years—Sister Cities
There we go. I think.
That was a struggle, honestly. I'm really not much of a fan of a lot of stuff released this year and it was a struggle to even come up with these. If you asked for a top 15 or 20 instead, I don't know if I could fill out the full list without getting into albums I thought were just "okay".
Okay, I'm not a big music fan, so I can't give you a top 10, but I thought I would at least try to throw something in the ring.
Iridescence by BROCKHAMPTON. They have become my favourite band since last year. If you haven't heard of them but like Hip Hop, I would suggest you look into them. Although they are hip hop, they are very genre defining and always switch it up. Look into their songs HEAT, 1999 WILDFIRE, and TONYA to see what I mean, they are all released in a very short time frame by the same group, but they are very different and will give you a good look at their range.
I seriously believe there is a BROCKHAMPTON song for everyone. Sorry for keeping it short and sweet again, I really don't know what I'm talking about.
I really like them but I am a little bummed because Ameer Vann was my favorite member.
He was awesome, but their reason for removing him made perfect sense. He had a really fucked past and I understand they wouldn't want to be associated with that.
I don't listen to a whole ton of new albums in any given year, but my favorite metal albums that came out this year:
I honestly can't even think of more than 5 albums this year that I genuinely enjoyed. I know Coheed's new album I liked, and Muse's newest album seems pretty cool too. Maybe it's because I don't enjoy rap or hip hop and it's really just been those two's time to shine this year. I've been struggling a lot to find new music because it seems like Rock has taken a backseat to Rap/Hip Hop recently
What sort of rock are you into? My top ten has a lot of metal and prog if you're into that.
Honestly just about anything these days, I'm just extraordinarily picky so not a lot makes my cut. I've been replaying Coheed's In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth III and Periphery's P3, with some RHCP and Incubus thrown in. I've been trying to dive into prog a lot but prog metal can be pretty abrasive. It's sacrilegious for me to like Periphery and TesseracT and not care for Opeth and Meshuggah lol
You might like the remastered, re-released version of Twin Fantasy by Car Seat Headrest that came out this year.
If you're into Periphery and TesseracT, check out Haken. They're not my favorite band but a good friend of mine, who is also into modern prog, is obsessed with them.
I didn't like Twin Fantasy at all but Haken seems pretty interesting so far. Thanks for the recs!
