This week's album and EP releases

Here's a list of a lot of things that came out in this past week, including many which are set to release on Friday. Of course, there's no way to be completely comprehensive with this and I avoided including things where information was too lacking, so feel free to mention anything that isn't on here that you think is worth mentioning. Beyond that, if you have any thoughts of any of these albums, it would be great to hear them :)

(oh and don't bully me for the genre tags, a lot of these things have very limited resources available and I couldn't individually listen to everything and determine what fits best, so I'm pulling from third parties and an artist's past work a lot of the time)

Thanks for the help this week, @Cleb!

    Anderson .Paak - Ventura (Neo-Soul, Contemporary R&B)

💖 .Paak so much... I have been listening to this album non-stop for the last few hours. It's seriously fucking incredible and might have even taken Yes Lawd!'s position as my favorite album of his. I highly recommend it if you like neo-soul/contemporary R&B. LFTL

p.s. I flog this link every time .Paak is mentioned but I can't help it... it's just so damn good:
Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

The Chemical Brothers - No Geography (Big Beat, Acid House)

Now that is a name I've not heard in a long time. I will have to check that out. LFTL

Norah Jones - Begin Again (Jazz Pop)

Norah Jones has always been a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. I didn't realize she had released a new album. LFTL

Also, fun fact: Norah's full name is Geethali Norah Jones Shankar, and she is worldwide megastar Ravi Shankar's daughter. Her step-sister, Anoushka Shankar is also a fantastic Indian/Hindustani folk musician and I highly recommend checking her out as well.

p.s. Anyone else got any recommendations for this week?

      Anoushka Shankar

I remember having this blow my mind a while back and suggest it to everyone. Much more interesting to "rockist" ears than most sitar music which I can usually only take in small doses.

Given that you didn't enjoy Oxnard all that much (IIRC) and prefer his rap to his soul music... you might not love it as much as I do. But yeah, he is a real charmer, ain't he? He's hard to hate....

p.s. Listening to the Anoushka Shankar clip now. I love Sitar music and often meditate to it, so I can tell already I will like it. :) edit: Oh damn... beat drop at 2min elevates it so much. A++ will keep listening.

That Anoushka Shankar performance was great and is going on my meditation playlist now. Thanks for sharing it! That ending where she just kills it at power metal speeds was amazing. I can see why you like it so much. :P

Those were great... that tabla player was insane! Thanks for sharing them.

My first introduction to the sitar, tabla, dilruba and a bunch of other Indian instruments was actually a Canadian Rock band (very similar to The Doors) called The Tea Party who used them (and many other eclectic instruments) frequently in their music and especially live. You might get a kick out of them:

p.s. Here is Jeff Martin (the lead singer) playing a Sitar live in concert with a bow which is pretty neat too:

I just want to make a small comment on the music industry in general. I like in which direction main stream music is going lately, its the era of fusion, which in turn makes it an era of experimentation. Breaking free of the echo recipe that has been pop music for so long.
Also, i am really enjoying the music culture here on tildes. We seem to have a wide array of deeply rooted and developed tastes by people who really loves music.

How exciting to see a new album by The Budos Band, thank you for the updates everyone! I am making new discovery's from all this as we speak. I`m going to have to edit my comment since there is o much to listen to.

    edits:
Why have i never heard of Black Flower, holy balls!

Bibio´s new album Ribbons is fantastic, i listened to closely the whole album while i walked back home from a doctors appointment just now. Spring just arrived here and this is one of the best days we have had since we entered spring, felt like the album was made for just this kind of occasion. I also think that it´s some of the best work he has done. I might be a bit biased since i prefer this over the more pop oriented music he has produced lately. This one was added to my collection without much thought.

@Whom It´s crazy how on point you are with my own taste in music. I will follow these posts closely in the future, thank you!

I totally agree. You know, I never actually expected to see this much diversity in music for a site with such a small user-base (especially one that has a broad range of topics). I've enjoyed searching for new music in the past 5 years such that I probably spend most of my listening time on tracks I haven't heard before.

The problem for me became a tendency to focus on the same several genres (largely within EDM/electronic). I realized that my tastes weren't nearly as diverse as I thought the were. Threads like this are so helpful for finding a wide range; you never know when you'll find something new that really resonates with you! New albums are especially important to me in that regard, in part for a reason similar to yours: you can see the broader view of modern musical development.

I just wish I had time to get through all the music I see; I've probably got a 500 song backlog at any given time

Considering the fact that a big chunk of the /r/listentothis mod team was amongst the very first users on the site, and I was the creator of /r/coversongs, it doesn't surprise me too much... especially after what @Amarok posted just 8 days after Tildes launched. He has big plans for ~music. :P

Although I will say that @Whom, @cleb, @ainar-g, @EightRoundsRapid and a bunch of other regular contributors continually surprise me with their amazing breadth and depth of music knowledge, and their obscure (but thoroughly enjoyable) and high effort submissions.

~music is definitely off to a great start, that's for sure.

Charts in the wiki, baby. That's what reddit's missing to bring some order to the chaos that is over ten thousand tracks submitted every day. Then we can see about auto-exporting those to spotify playlists and perhaps using Soundiiz to replicate them from Spotify to any other services. If that gets set up, those playlists are going to get epic, and eventually draw music lovers back to Tildes. The tags will let us laze through the data in ways that would never work on reddit.

For a preview of this sort of thing, this spotify playlist is an hourly-updating set made from the current /r/listentothis content. We pitched this to reddit, of course, but as usual it was like talking to a brick wall. They really have no idea how to steward content over there. :/

There was a time where the l2t team was considering bot-ifying all of this into reddit. I'd say we burnt out on reddit's staff/mod bs before it ever got past the planning phase.
