hello! I am also a hiphop/rap enthusiast. I have been listening to quite a bit of hiphop for a long time, including Nas. I have something for you, I don't know if you have heard of Odd Future [1], but I find them to be pretty similar and really very interesting! Also, while I am at it, shoutout to BROCKHAMPTON [2] for being really amazing at this game!

As far as genres go, I think you'll find that most people here are pretty open minded. Some of the first people on here were sourced from the mod team of /r/music and /r/listentothis, so expect to see things from just about every genre.

It's hard to say how the taste of this group will develop as the site grows, but I'm hoping we can keep this a place for high-quality music discussion from all genres.

Hello to the ~ hhh branch!

Illmatic has worn off on me a little in recent times, but it's still a great record. This is where I ask everyone to listen to I Am...

It's about as good as Illmatic if you ask me, but too often it gets treated as the album with Nas is Like on it and nothing else.

I'm def. in the "Old Head" category, but I dig beats and rhymes. Looking forward to the hip hop sub as a solid resource for good new music.

I'm a huge 90s hip hop fan. Illmatic is the greatest album of all time imo. It's flawless in every way. Boom bap is by far my favorite sub genre of hip hop.

I love me some Nas but I dunno about Illmatic being the greatest of all time... The Low End Theory, 36 Chambers, The Score, Black on Both Sides, Soundbombing II and many more are certainly in the running as well for me. It's really hard to pick a definitive winner amongst the pure genius that was 90s rap/hip-hop.

I love Nas because his flow was so ahead of it's time. It revolutionized hip hop and elevated it forever imo. He was the second coming of Rakim. People forget that when Nas blew everyone's minds in 94 that he'd already been writing and rapping like that since 1991. Remember what the majority of hip hop was doing and sounding like in 1991? I think illmatic sounds just as fresh today as it did when it came out.

That said, I love all of your other suggestions too. ATCQ is def my favorite group of all time. I guess I tend to separate single artists from groups. Q tip is special to me though.

Oh I don't disagree. ATCQ is legendary. Beats Rhymes and Life is my favorite album by them. I think my favorite track of theirs is The Hop.

Love that album. I really enjoy slower rap like what BIG did. However, I can't say I'm much "in the know" about recent hip-hop so I'm enjoying this thread. One of the last shows I went to was the Up In Smoke tour lol.

Recently, I find myself enjoying the various lofi hiphop stations on YouTube. Great for relaxing.
