The first stage in the deal would also see the release of a number of Israeli hostages, including women, the elderly, and the wounded in exchange for “hundreds” of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, according to Biden.

I have 2 friends in Israel that were arrested for simply uttering support for folks in Gaza and have yet to see due process. What constitutes a prisoner vs a hostage to me seem to be bureaucracy.

I hope your friends are okay man. They are absolute chads for standing up for Palestinians.

Thanks, they are Palestinian themselves, be it Israeli Palestinians with Israeli citizenship. Hopefully their status should afford them broader protections and get them out soon. Honestly, I don't think either intended or expected to be in this situation as it was based on some pretty harmless social media posts and statements. It did have the chilling effect of causing a number of other folks in that circle of going silent online and even to the point of placing their phones on airplane mode for months on end. All pretty surreal stuff.

It'd be about intent. I don't even think Hamas would claim that the people they kidnapped committed a crime, or that the primary intent was either justice or punishment - they're both ostensibly and de facto held to use a bargaining chips with the Israeli government, which is why they're hostages.

Meanwhile, I don't imagine your friend, who is Israeli Palestinian, is going to be used for hostage exchanges. "Prisoner" doesn't have positive connotations; you'd call the people Stalin jailed during his purges as prisoners, and I don't think anyone is saying that was justified in any way. They were jailed presumably for the convenience of the regime, not to convince Hamas to do something (probably wouldn't be very useful for that).

It's not just the distinction between "prisoner" and "hostage" that's questionable here. It can't be ignored that when the Israelis are talked about, "including women, the elderly, and the wounded" is tacked on. But when Palestinians are talked about, nothing of the sort is mentioned, despite many of them being children.

U.S. publications do this kind of double-talk a lot. It's everywhere, and it's sickening.

They've both been in touch with family and are working with a lawyer. They both work in the media which saw a particularly harsh crackdown early on in the invasion.
