Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news

Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like reddit, crowdstrike and bethesda. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was caught unawares.

But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!

Old books can be loaded with poison. It's not just old books, there's even more recent history of unsafe objects using toxic and radioactive heavy metals for coloration. Bon appetit!

TGIF! Great topic you put up this fine morning. I just started watching the Blacklist Show Season 10 where a book laced with poison was used as a prop. Got me thinking, what book is the most dangerous book? Anyway, down a hole I went. Happy Friday to you all.

Historic Hong Kong tofu brand admits importing bean curd from China after food safety checks expose origin

Fermented tofu from Liu Ma Kee – which was founded in in 1905 – has been promoted by the Tourism Board as a “distinctly Hong Kong ingredient.” The company failed two food safety checks in recent weeks and has since shut down.

    ...

When asked why the brand had never clarified to customers that the raw materials were not from Hong Kong, Liu said: “We have already closed down. Do we really need to clarify?” (HK Free Press link)

Not sure if it's offbeat but darn scary. Labels now a days mean nothing. Made in USA means nothing given how all components come from all over the place.

Not an oeuf: Athletes report eggs shortage in Olympic village

Several athletes have complained about a shortage of food at the Olympic Village in Paris, according to reports.

Competitors have said the amount of food available, specifically eggs, which were rationed at breakfast on Wednesday, and grilled meats, is insufficient, according to the French newspaper L'Équipe.

I don't know much about sports but even I know that Olympians need protein, and condoms. Funny priorities, Paris.

I don't know much about sports but even I know that Olympians need protein, and condoms.

That’s about 230,000 protection options, and if you do the math, that’s about 20 condoms per person for each of the 10,500 athletes.

      Funny priorities, Paris.

Or Henri just forgot to confirm the egg order yesterday. I anticipate my TT feed having opinions if it was particularly bad as I'm following a lot of Olympians right now
