Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news
Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like anaphylaxis, customers and tim walz. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was overly fussed.
But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat
stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!
Bulgarian beach bar sarcophagus turns out to be genuine Roman artefact

Honestly, if I am in this box and in a bar. Life and after life well done in my opinion.
I've been there but staying functional would be the least of my problem. Last time that happened to me the screen was melting in front of my eyes. 3 days! Wow! Mad respect.
...insomnia plays World of Warcraft for three days straight to smash record
I think my longest gaming sessions have been about 14hrs. I did it once in Planetside 2 and then I've done it a few times in Eve Online.
In, Eve, it was easy, since these were massive battles with "TiDi" -- "Time Dilation", essentially the servers and clients slow to slower than a crawl to process the insane amount of player commands and data being sent. Playing in TiDi doesn't require any fast paced thinking or concentration, because it takes well over a minute for anything to happen.
But in PS2, which is a persistent world FPS, after 14hrs straight, I was dizzy, I was nauseous, I had a headache, my eyes hurt...I just felt awful. I wasn't even that tired, but I just had to lay down. And I pretty much immediately passed out.
I know WoW, as an MMO, probably isn't as fast-paced as an FPS, except maybe in some instanced content. I've done some 8-10hr sessions in FFXIV, but then I start getting bored. And tired.
So to play WoW for 78hrs straight is absolutely insane to me. Honestly, after playing anything for 78hrs straight, I don't think I'd want to play games for awhile!
On the one hand, I think it depends on how you play — being on the front line shooting people, that’s intense and draining, I totally agree. But if you’re just a low effort squad leader throwing down markers on the map and chatting to people without trying to be particularly strategic, I could see that being manageable for longer periods.
Having said all that, the few times I’ve been awake for like 20 hours in a row I’ve been pretty delirious and I can’t imagine going even twice that, let alone nearly 4x — I think I’d be utterly disconnected from reality at that stage.
I was an Infiltrator main in PS2. I think during that session, I was trying to finish an Auraxium of one of my SMGs, so I was almost entirely at the front the whole time! I rarely SL'd, and never PL'd. But I agree with you; probably is easier for them since they're mostly watching the map from a Sunderer.
As I've gotten older, it has gotten much, much harder to stay up for 24hrs straight. It's definitely been a while -- probably on the order of years -- since I last did it. I think I did about 20hrs earlier this year, attempting to watch a 24hr motorsport endurance race. That was difficult, even though I prepared somewhat beforehand.
Gosh, 14 hours of front line SMG infiltrator is intense!
And agreed that it’s more difficult as I get older too — back in my university days, a 24h LAN was exhausting but totally doable. But nowadays I couldn’t imagine it! Most recently, leading up to New Year’s Eve, I was being good about keeping my sleep schedule (in bed by 9:30pm) and it made staying up to midnight a bit of a challenge!
Few days late but
Note that the village of Omena is unincorporated (there's essentially no local government other than Leelanaw County) and has a population of about 300 people. It's a lovely place right on the lakeshore, and worth visiting, but they don't have high governance needs.
Then why are they electing a mayor that's more than twice as tall?
Leelanaw Cellars probably hired the dog as another winery ambassador, and the village decided not to risk losing the next mayor.

Damn you Fal! I'd just bookmarked this very article for tomorrow's edition of Offbeat Fridays... Back to my original choice. 😆
I'd say share it again tomorrow anyway, in case anyone misses this one.
and then claim ignorance if anyone points it out
