Offbeat Fridays – The thread where offbeat headlines become front page news

Tildes is a very serious site, where we discuss very serious matters like elections, forums and internet archive. Tags culled from the highest voted topics from the last seven days, if anyone was bemused.

But one of my favourite tags happens to be offbeat! Taking its original inspiration from Sir Nils Olav III, this thread is looking for any far-fetched offbeat stories lurking in the newspapers. It may not deserve its own post, but it deserves a wider audience!

Taxidermist turns rats into ‘sexy showgirls’ with nipple covers and fake eyelashes

A mother who transforms frozen rats into ‘sexy showgirls’ with coloured feathers, handmade nipple covers and fake eyelashes has said her novelty taxidermy business regularly requires 12-hour days to keep up with demand.

    Gallery of past work.

I won't apologize for sharing this. The world needs to know.

They're really pretty!!! I mean, mammals are already small and fuzzy and cute, so dressing them up so they look the best, and giving them lashes to accentuate their eyes make sense. And then I guess feathers and sequins are less....but people dress up their living pets all the time right? And somehow the glamour shots esthetics was able to bridge the mental gap for me that "normal" taxidermy doesn't: they're obviously not alive anymore, but rather than lifelike yet weirdly frozen, they're not lifelike holding a pose for a photoshoot.

      They're pretty!!

Maybe it'll be less controversial if the animals involved are ex-pets?

They really do have a unique quality that normal taxidermy doesn't have, and the action poses and glint in their eye really helps. You read the title and think house of a thousand corpses, but...

You read the title and think house of a thousand corpses, but then the pictures do a real 180 from that.

Didn't expect that! Who knew rats have such a following.

Beer can artwork accidentally thrown in bin by staff member at Dutch museum

A Dutch museum has recovered an artwork that looks like two empty beer cans after a staff member accidentally threw it in the rubbish bin thinking it was trash.

The work, entitled All The Good Times We Spent Together by French artist Alexandre Lavet, appears on first glance to be two discarded and dented beer tins.
