Relevant long-form comic ‘Sports Are Political!’ that talks about the history of sports and sums up my feelings towards this new NFL policy.

Sports are only political when it's beneficial to a group, otherwise it's entertainment and only entertainment.

Let's see... Kanye is a "free thinker" for supporting Trump and everyone needs to calm down, but NFL players opposing him are "animals" and should "stick to sports."

Depends on what you’re looking for. I have many friends mocking Kanye, other friends saying Colin et al should be fired for kneeling. It’s just one of the inconsistencies of modern partisanship.

I mean Colin is fired but not because he kneeled, because he's a mediocre at best backup level qb who's girlfriend has said some incredibly racist things about the Ravens owner and Ray Lewis and the media shitstorm that would come with having him on your team isn't worth his mediocre skill set.

NFL is a private business. Owners can do what they want. Patriots don't allow anyone with any history of domestic abuse on their team. No one is making a big deal about the fact that they are just about the only team with that policy.

I respect the guys for kneeling and I respect Kanye for having an actual opinion that's more than "I'm black so I have to be a Democrat". I will also defend the NFLs right to fine people who kneel. It's just a smart business move.

This still seems like one of those political things invented by the media to distract from serious things going on though

I tire of people foisting the blame for a story's popularity on the media. The stories are popular because they resonate with people. End stop. This does have the effect of distracting people from other issues, but they are people who want to be distracted. That's why we're talking about sports in the first place.

I take your point on why Colin was fired. I wasn't suggesting there was much controversy about that (though the far left would claim otherwise). I was just listing the first name that came to mind of people kneeling that I saw people saying regularly should be fired. And the reason they gave for wanting him fired WAS because he was kneeling, not because he was mediocre.

Edit: Also, people don't currently make a big deal about the Patriot's no-abuse policy, but there have been episodes in the recent past where domestic abuse was a part of the NFL headlines where I remember people mentioning what some teams were doing to make clear where they stand, even as the NFL itself appeared rather soft.

The vast majority of people do not care even if some keyboard warriors on Facebook claim they won't support the NFL because they're on one side or the other when most of them didn't watch anything besides the super bowl anyway

I am just frustrated when people seem to blame "the media" as though it is some formless entity beyond our reach or influence. There is an interplay between media and consumption. Without a symbiosis, neither would persist.

I agree with that and I think that's what we're seeing here. Something that's not a huge deal for most people being blown out of proportion because people like drama and there's nothing else to show in the off-season.

I wonder if the effect of this will be no one coming out until after the Anthem plays.

The American football league said players who do not stand for the Star-Spangled Banner can stay in the locker room until it has been performed.

It's not, "disrespectful" is the term that's being used to distract people from the reason these protests are occurring.

Just like every other time in history when anyone challenging the status quo was told to sit down and shut up; or in this case, I suppose, to stand up and shut up.

I'm also a fan in the south (Atlanta, Georgia) and it's come up more than once, and not in a positive light. It's definitely not made up, and any attempt to disregard it is just averting your attention from the problem.

Likewise - I'm from the southeast and I know people who fall on both sides of the issue, and I've seen a fair number of arguments about it on Facebook. My dad has sworn off watching NFL games (not that he was a big fan in the first place) over it.

Personally, I don't see why people are offended about the kneeling. The only argument I've seen that I felt had some substance to it was that the NFL is allowing it after disallowing players from making statements in other ways in the past, and that they should either allow all (non-disruptive) political statements or none.

It seems most people I know who have "sworn the NFL off" weren't big fans anyway. Regardless of political affiliation, no big fan I know gives 2 shits whether or no they kneel.

I mean, the NFL can do whatever they want, it's a private organization. Makes sense from a business standpoint to fine them because to people who think it's disrespectful, it looks like they're being punished. To people who care, the players are still kneeling and it makes them look even more noble. Also gives NFL owners a chance to look good with players and hello pay fines for them. It's a savvy business move.

Most people who watch NFL don't care though.
