The ban, which the Arizona Supreme Court reinstated last month, is still likely to temporarily take effect this summer before the repeal due to procedural rules.

Also, while Republicans hold the majority in the state legislature, this was all the Democrats plus a couple of Republicans crossing the aisle to get this repealed. This isn't Republicans changing their mind in any particular way.

Democrats need to hammer on this issue and make sure everyone knows where Republicans stand on this. I don't have much faith that they will though.

The ban, which dates to early territorial days in 1864, forbids doctors from providing abortions except when necessary to save the life of the mother. The repeal will allow a 2022 law permitting abortions through 15 weeks of pregnancy to take effect.

Why people can become so consumed with past ideologies is beyond me. Clinging to the "good ol' days", as if it were great then. Sure, for some, for their parents and grandparents. These systemic values echo through generations and it's a shame people don't think in the here and now. I amusingly once said that Conservatives are Progressives but 50 years too late.

It would be so much easier if people just let slip their pasts, look at the current state of affairs, peer into the future and think, "What do we need? What is science telling us? Where do we need to make strides to stop bad things from happening like they have in the past?

Because some of the rich and powerful can get even more rich and powerful by selling delusions.

And nostalgia is one of the strongest delusions there is. That things were "better" in the past, that people were kinder and more respectful and smarter and richer. That the people looking to the future are fools when the glorious past is right there. And forward thinking scares people who know their influence will wane with a smarter, healthier, (equally) wealthier society.

Some govern to lead and assist us into finding a better future one day at a time, and some govern for the control it offers over others. Or, more commonly, religious zealotry.

Respectfully, I think what you might be missing is that those that oppose abortion literally believe it is murder.

With that understanding, have our values with respect to murder changed? Is being opposed to murder "clinging to the good ol' days"?

It's easy to say that people are old fashioned or aren't ready to change with the times, but when those people have sincerely held beliefs, I think it's a bit dismissive to make those ad hominin arguments.

That doesn't mean their belief changed (necessarily). It means they've figured out how to rationalize it to themselves in any one of a dozen different ways that has allowed them live with the belief that it's murder AND ok for them to do it.

I wouldn't try and generalize everyone that holds a particular view. I can tell you that there are definitely people that believe it is murder. They believe this very sincerely. These people have no wish to be involved in politics. They aren't grandstanders. They simply believe that abortion is murder of an innocent human being and believe that it should not be allowed.

If they actually believed it was murder, they would want birth control to be provided for free as conveniently as possible. They'd want comprehensive sex education to be taught before kids hit puberty so they would know how to avoid an unplanned pregnancy. And if they did push for those things, we'd have the numbers to get them done. Either they don't sincerely believe that it is murder, or they somehow think premarital sex is worse than murder.

There are some individuals who do want to see abortion banned and do also want those other things, but they are a small minority.

You're absolutely right. And I could've dug a little deeper into the context instead of throwing over a blanket cover like I did. I currently don't have the capacity to do so but know that you are...
