They are keenly aware of MAD, like anyone else, so I'm sure they won't start pressing the rocket button like it owes them money. Russia does not want nuclear war either. Their entire tactic is preventing additional aid and it's proven successful to continuously say "hey guys, we have them too y'know", but their doctrine didn't allow them to follow through with these threats*. This change is worrisome, but it's worrisome because it broadens the definition and makes it more difficult to assess what they consider to be the real red line, not because it signals they're about to start a nuclear winter.
*doctrine is ultimately just a document. Russia, as well as any other nation, can forgo their nuclear deterrence doctrine and start throwing hands if they'd feel suicidal for shits and giggles. So while that document is definitely important, as it signals your likely standpoint on the use of nuclear weaponry, it is just a piece of paper and the threat is between the lines.
Heretofore? Dear @deimos, does Tildes have any way to detect Russian bots? Would that be possible/feasible? I am from the Czech Republic, which is often used as a testing ground by the Russian lie...
A change in doctrine seems like a much bigger deal than the sabre-rattling that Russia has heretofore engaged in. Scary stuff.
Heretofore?
Dear @deimos, does Tildes have any way to detect Russian bots? Would that be possible/feasible? I am from the Czech Republic, which is often used as a testing ground by the Russian lie machine - too bad the book "Průmysl lži" (The Industry of Lies) by Alvarová is only available in the Czech language. I can smell (some of) that shit from miles away. When Russians do certain actions and suddenly there is a flood of comments on all kinds of forums with the same sentiment and the same weird language quirks and ruscisms spreading fear, muddying the waters, and wasting our time, I get annoyed and often leave the discussion - which I should not, because that is exactly what they want. Any other solution would be preferable.

I've generally been in favor of aiding Ukraine---in fact, I think the US made a grave mistake not sending sufficient gear to completely expel Russia back when momentum was on Ukraine's side. But I'm also afraid of nuclear escalation. The chances Putin would launch an ICBM over this are extremely low, but I don't think it's impossible that he would decide to use tactical nuclear weapons basically to demonstrate commitment.
But Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said "we strongly are in favour of doing everything to not allow nuclear war to happen".
Speaking at a press conference at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Mr Lavrov said a declaration signed by the group, which includes Russia "clearly said we want to move towards a world free of nuclear weapons".
A change in doctrine seems like a much bigger deal than the sabre-rattling that Russia has heretofore engaged in. Scary stuff.
Ahhhh, it's just marketing at this point. I'm sure the actual doctrine remains "I dunno just do whatever daddy putin tells you".

You might be reading into this too much. The word choice is 100% appropriate for the sentence they wrote.

Yes, war is peace and lie is truth.
