So we all know this is purely performative, right? There's literally no actionable, legal way to cede or annex counties from one state to another, that I know of. Edit: Also as someone who lives...

Edit: Also as someone who lives in Illinois, I wouldn't mind saying good riddance to bad rubbish but this ain't happening.

As a Hoosier, funnily enough I find one of my biggest objections is just how the shape of the state would change. We'd no longer be loosely high heel boot shaped, we'd have some weird ugly bulge and become a loosely high-fashion high heel boot shape instead. So many US maps and memorabilia would have to be reprinted/redone, anything with Indiana and Illinois printed on it would no longer be accurate...

Weirdly I think that last point might actually be one of the more viable arguments against it. The costs of all the wasted materials that have either state on it, from maps to clothing to puzzles to books to signs, would be too staggering.

I mean, at least that one is just text so you can just use a sticker or cross it out with a marker. But changing a state's shape requires redrawing said shape everywhere it appears, and there's a LOT more merchandise with Indiana and Illinois printed on them than the words "Gulf of Mexico America".

Though would be funny to see people just try to use marker to redraw the state borders on like, official signs and US maps and stuff...

Sounds to me like it’s a bill to run a bunch of meetings that will lead to nothing.

House Bill 1008, authored by Speaker Todd Huston, would establish an Indiana-Illinois boundary adjustment commission to research the possibility of adjusting the boundaries between the two states. If the bill becomes law, Braun would have to set the commission’s first meeting no later than Sept. 1.

Once the commission, which should meet at least once a year, reaches a recommendation on adjusting the boundary, its members will have 60 days to submit a written report to the general assembly, according to the bill. Finally, the bill states the commission’s recommendation to adjust the boundary between Indiana and Illinois wouldn’t take effect until approved by the Indiana legislature, the Illinois legislature and the U.S. Congress.

Sounds to me like it’s a bill to run a bunch of meetings that will lead to nothing.

Yeah, I originally found an article from a local TV station and then decided to use a bigger source but I kept the headline because it was more descriptive than the Tribune's. I guess maybe I could have changed it, but I'm not sure what could have been descriptive without being unwieldy.

Indiana wants to take poor Republican counties off of Illinois to entrench their red supermajority without thinking about the cost to support them, and Illinois is laughing at them.
