...On the other hand, throughout the entire time I spent reading this entire post, I felt like that meme with the chef from Ratatouille reading some paper.
Basically this. Thank you for articulating it. Like this makes sense. It mirrors my thoughts on a lot of things. I also hate that I've had to think about it and read that.

Agreed, it feels like I read the Necronomicon and have some new ways to think about the world at great cost. Feels like it’s tied into a similar gambling trend, prediction markets, AI doing it for...

Casual observation of porn in its natural habitat (the internet) leads me to believe that these are underestimates. One in six people may respond to a survey that they find black people uniquely erotic or enjoy raceplay, but that leaves out people who are subconsciously aroused by racial dynamics without realizing or are perhaps too shy to admit it. Way more than 20% of cuckold porn involves a black man.
I find the assertion that people answering Aellas big sex survey were bold enough to admit that they like cuckolding, but too shy to admit that a racial component turned them on, is quite flimsy.
the "more than 20% means that more people must like it" thing is a very common and actually kind of tricky error, so I can't hold it against the author. Just because there's a lot of a certain kind of pornography (or cake, or whatever) doesn't necessarily mean that most people are into that. Instead it's more likely that a small minority of people are fanatical about that thing and consume it disproportionately. It's like being an author. You don't want everyone to kind of like you, you want 10% of people to be insane fanatics and then it doesn't matter what the 90% think.
There's also some conflating of surveys of "people" with the attitudes and preferences of cis men, particularly cis white conservative men. I'm not up for digging through the data for accuracy,...

I'm not up for digging through the data for accuracy, and the author refocuses on this population throughout but is far less specific when talking about the survey data and thus is glossing over a broader picture IMO, while trying to stay focused.... But distracting me with this pattern.
