The dearMoon project was a lunar tourism mission and art project conceived and financed by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa. It was to make use of a SpaceX Starship spacecraft on a private spaceflight flying a single circumlunar trajectory around the Moon. The passengers would have been Maezawa and eight other civilians. The project was unveiled in September 2018 and was scheduled to launch in 2023.[4] It was later indefinitely delayed until Starship completed development and then fully cancelled in June of 2024. The project objective was to have eight passengers travel with Maezawa for free around the Moon on a six-day tour. Maezawa said that they expect the experience of space tourism to inspire the accompanying passengers in the creation of something new. If successful, the art would have been exhibited some time after returning to Earth with the goal of promoting peace around the world.
What a bummer this must be for the eight passengers who were selected. As far as I’m aware these are not super privileged or important people, just artists the billionaire in question seemed to...

Maybe the idea of having your one ticket to space cancelled on you hits harder to me, as someone who grew up fascinated with space. But I can’t help but think that for a few years at least these people would wake up thinking they will soon be going to space, a privilege previously reserved for only a very select few. That has to have some kind of effect on you.
Tim Dodd with the Everyday Astronaut YouTube channel was one of the 8 and made a post about his feelings here. It sounds like he’s getting past it, but it has to be a huge blow.

Well that’s a bummer. With Starship now making solid progress in launch tests I figured maybe the schedule would get changed, but wasn’t expecting outright cancellation.
