This is Snyder trying to be cheeky and do as little as possible and to make the transition as awkward and lame as possible as some kind of petty ass “punishment” for the fans.
While I'll be the first in line to call Snyder a POS little troll, it takes time to find a name not taken (or buy one that is), trademark, copyright, logo design, focus groups, get approval from NFL, and so on. It's infinitely quicker, and he's probably on a deadline from the NFL, to have no name this year, replace the logo with a W, replace the name with "Washington" on uniforms, and have it all approved and made in time for the season to start.
I don't expect "Washington Football Team" merch will sell very well, except maybe as collector's items? The cost of two rebrandings (or one and a half, I guess) likely isn't appealing either. I...
