Moreover, I bet it's increased beyond the cost - I get this feeling from the inflation coverage as well, but a lot of people seem incapable of understand the effect of demand on prices.

Some of it is indirect. It’s no accident that the Premier League games that are free in the US are in stadiums named after brands that are big in the US. For instance, Brighton has the American Express Stadium and presumably American Express is as glad to put their brand in front of me in the US as it would be for something in the UK. I guess customers, shareholders, or vendors wind up paying the price for that sponsorship so it is something broad across the economy that affects fans and non-fans.

1500 words to answer a question that already has an obvious answer: yes, consumers pay for every cost incurred, even if that cost is Messi.

Miami added Messi, Busquets, and Alba and went from being the worst team in MLS to winning Leagues Cup overnight. I feel for people that will get priced out of season tickets, drop back to less expensive seats, or stomach the doubling of season ticket prices. That’s no fun.

Orlando supporters were not shy about displaying their “built not bought” signs when Miami played in Orlando. This is natural consequence of Miami going the “bought” route.

To be fair, if Messi showed any interest in literally any other MLS team, any one of those clubs would've gladly done backflips towards the "bought" route. Shame that his hamstring and coach let him down -- playing him in a mostly meaningless match against a TFC side that could've been contested by Miami's maintenance crew and academy kids. 2024 should be fun, but they'll need to rest the Barça triumvirate every other game or so.
