Sainz's blocking/lack of awareness was ridiculous, but we see similar every weekend. IMO, they should crack down with tougher and tougher penalties until teams decide maybe the extra track evolution isn't worth the risk of penalty.

I also like IndyCar's solution, which is to move the quali start/finish line back before pit in, so that drivers can come right in after their hot lap without doing a cool down lap. This drastically reduces the congestion on track.

I thought lowering tire blanket temps, or removing them completely, would help (needing to drive faster on out laps to warm up tires) but that would probably just prompt 2 warm-up laps and increase congestion further.

What about changing the tire compound to minimize track evolution so there is less incentive to wait until the last moment to do a hot lap?

In my opinion, if you impede someone in qualifying, you shouldn't be allowed to advanced to the next session. Yes Sainz got a grid drop, but he should be starting P15 or lower, not P11. The stewards are so slow with these decisions and always hand out penalties after the session when they have minimal effect.

For context, Hulkenberg put in a well timed lap (in an arguably back-of-the-pack Haas), a mere second before a red flag dropped, to secure second place in the provisional starting grid. Since the rain conditions worsened after the red flag, no other teams were able to contest previously set laps.

However, Hulkenberg now received a three place grid penalty, as did Stroll, Sainz and Tsunoda.

Albon also managed to take advantage of a drying track in Q2 to score himself a spot in Q3, setting the fastest lap of Q2.

Sainz has also impeded a number of drivers in critical portions of the track, leading to Gasly not being able to set a proper final lap in Q1 (which may have resulted in an early exit for the Frenchman). Is it a matter of team miscommunication or should he be more aware?

Are the penalties going to neuter what would have been a very interesting first row start for Haas? Did Ferrari botch their drivers' qualifying sessions again, or was it just a matter of bad luck?

I can't say I'm not happy about Alonso being on the front row. Hopefully it'll be an interesting fight between him and Verstappen (or VER just does the usual and gets a 10s lead in the first 5 laps... but I can at least hope? :)). Sadly it looks like it will be no rain which would've evened out the field a little.

Ferrari really really needs to be on the ball a bit more. The last years have been such an embarrassment both in the manufacturing of the car and the strategy department.

The fact that the drivers continue to be ignored on their suggestions that would have resulted in a better outcome is getting ridiculous.

Probably another Max runaway win, while I think Perez is going to have a tough day unless Ferrari pulls a Ferrari (tire temp from above?). I'm interested to see how well Gasly does from where he's at.

The qualifying rounds have been just, if not more interesting than the actual races this year!

It has been like that for decades, it is the only part of the weekend where they really push the cars and consequently their talent to the limit.

    At least it's not Ferrari.

I had the same thought. Too harsh for Nico.

It will also be interesting to see where Perez ends up. He could use some redemption via podium.

FYI thanks for not spoiling the results for those of us who rarely watch it live. Is it a policy on Tildes to not spoil sports in the post title?

I've had sports spoiled many times by Reddit, and yesterday the official F1 youtube channel spoiled the qualifying pole in the title. It's so weird that movies and scripted shows have spoiler rules, but not sports.

Nico’s penalty was too harsh, Carlos’ penalty wasn’t harsh enough. I’m primarily a Red Bull fan so I’ve got no horse in the race. The penalty against Nico seemed to be more about keeping the race start interesting. Otherwise, the CCTV stuff was frustrating, but the rain on Saturday made for a really interesting qualifying.
