Happy Friday! What's everyone doing this weekend?
I'm driving a few hours to Cincinnati to catch a cubs game with my parents. I only get to see them about ~10-12 times a year since we live about 5 hours apart and this was last minute, so I'm super glad I get to sneak some more time in with em :)
What's everyone getting up to? Any fun plans, neat projects, or we'll deserved relaxing?
Oooo pretty, I really like that
@Deimos will ~ be getting native theme support?
It already does: https://tildes.net/settings
If you mean will ~ start accepting user contributions to that built in theme system, AFAIK that is still undecided yet but my personal opinion is that once the site is opensource it should be allowed, however design standards should be enforced for them. e.g. no moving the new top level comment box, no moving vote buttons, etc...
And as for groups having their own custom CSS, there was a daily discussion on it not that long ago, as well:
https://tildes.net/~tildes.official/1hw/daily_tildes_discussion_should_we_allow_groups_to_have_customized_appearances
I think the person meant in the style of Wikipedia or 4chan where you can use a theme locally.
When I first read this I thought you were working on a Dracula themed novel.
My entire family lives within a mile of each other, and I've been working on ways to reduce the amount of trash we're putting in the bin. We've been composting for a few months, and I'm interested in doing some experiments with biogas for the food waste that I can't compost.
It's trash, but I'm excited about doing it!
I'm going climbing tomorrow and think I'll spend Sunday relaxing and catching up all the things I've been meaning to read. And then the West World finale of course, which I suspect will be a spectacle if nothing else.
I didn't realize the West World Finale was this Sunday, I'm still behind and episode.... Might have to stay up late Sunday and watch em back to back.
I went climbing last night, and am taking someone new on Monday night. Hopefully they'll become a convert!
I wanna get into climbing, once it's cold out I was thinking of finding an climbing gym.
Any recommendations for a total complete newb?
Just get stuck in! if you have a little spare cash it would be worth it to hop onto a course, this gives you the chance to meet a few people who are also getting into the sport.
Don't buy gear straight away, and talk to your local gym about deals they may have. The gyms around me have a 'if you do the training course with us, we'll give you a discount on gear' thing going on.
I'm preparing to work on the food stall at a traditional bonfire-side party at college. Lots of dancing, lovely innocent flirtation (such as on-site romantic mail), rural-style clothing.
Gonna be fun!
It the midsummer celebration here in Finland, and I've been spending time with the family out in the countryside. Weather has been less warm and nice than the preceding weeks, as is the tradition. Tonight we got some sun though, which was nice.
I received my tildes invitation some time ago, and have now been looking around. Seems quite nice so far!
What do you do for the summer solstice? Here in the states I was vaugly aware that it's happening, in Finland do you do anything special in general?
Speaking of Finland in general, most visible things are likely bonfires, though they're not really practised here in this particular area (we have Easter bonfires instead). Lots of sauna and food and being together. Overusing alcohol should probably be mentioned as part of the cultural landscape.
Important thing to remember is that even southern Finland is fairly close to the Arctic circle, so at this time the night is very short and there's a lot of light even then. This then creates a stark contrast to the dark Finnish winter, which explains why (as I understand it) midsummer has now and historically been larger event in Finland and other northern countries than in more southern ones.
Also: midsummer is clearly the least Christian-influenced large holiday we have left, so we like to remember the pagan "magic rituals", or at least joke about them. There's a short paragraph in Wikipedia if someone's interested.
I've seen videos of those bonfires!
And speaking as someone who went to college in a place thoroughly settled by swedes, I know how awesome a night of sauna-Ing can be.
Streaming, fixing some LEDs on my keeb, birthday BBQ for my gf, and playing some DND! Maybe if I can get my friend to commit we'll record a podcast too.
Ain't no such thing as a bad weekend when a. Dnd sesh is involved!
My campaign at to take a break this month cause of how busy we are but I can't wait to next weekend when we can start up again.
Currently doing a re-watch of Tng (although Voyager is my Fav bad ass momma Janeway ftw) it's my first time watching through the series in order although I doubt I'll find an episode I missed.
It's raining here and it's super fucking cold. Staying at home just like last year for the same reasons :(
Have to go on a work trip Sun - Thurs. Basically can't use today or tomorrow. I am going to leave early here and vote in the primary, then tomorrow I have to work and pack. So I really won't be able to do a lot of stuff I need to.
Thats sucky, but good on Ya for getting out and voting, and eat some good Per-diem food on your trip!
Thanks.
Working :( At least it's supposed to be thundery! That means all the little kiddos at the pool probably won't try and swim, though you never know when working at a country club. Those people can be really... Serious about their swimming, to put it one way.
To put it another way, there is more than one family who will wait by the gate until the pool opens and won't leave until closes... Every day of every week for the entire summer.
I'm painting some furniture and also redecorating the room which is going to be the nursery soon. Also attempting to keep my very pregnant wife comfortable in the heat... If I get time I'm going to edit some video and get that ready to upload.
Also my parents are visiting so we're hanging out between painting jobs and going out for dinner this evening.
I'm working on a painting project for the tabletop game I play, and probably trying out some of the new games I got from the Steam Summer Sale.
Brewfest with some college buddies and then working on Sunday
Honestly, I don't know. Since summer holiday began, I've been trying incredibly hard to resist just sitting online for 5 hours a day. I can't do sports, it's 43 degrees Celsius outside. And I don't know how to draw, though I'd like to learn.
There should be a bajillion drawing tutorials on YouTube!
Don't let perfect get in the way of good! Do some drawing!
Your last sentence was brilliant. You know what? I'll get on it. I'll share on ~art if I get any good.. Thank you!
Just remember it's a process, judge yourself against you from yesterday, not against others.
Trying to learn how to code in Unity, specifically, I'm trying out this new coding format(?) called 'ECS' (Entity Component System), looks interesting, just finished following this tutorial, now I'm just looking for the next one.
Have a good day!
Single malt whiskey... My man/woman/person!
Lol, been there, done that, never learn
Going to sit at home and play the N64, and it'll be fun!
Yesterday and today I was doing a list of programming problems to send this Monday. I just finished it and now I'm finally on vacation! \o/
I'm going to my university's orientation tomorrow and I'm really excited.
Nice!
College was some of the funnest years of my life (although I am thoroughly enjoying the post college life!) so enjoy it!
I'm currently living with 3 people I lived with in college and they're my closest friends!
College can be really stressful and I might be speaking with rose colored glasses but enjoy it! It's a weird mix of independence /responsibility /lack of responsibility.
Had my oldest son's 7th birthday party at action city and chaos water park. What a day. We were all exhausted by the end of it. My two boys have been getting spoiled all month due to family birthdays, but they're good kids, so no big deal there!
