What are you doing this week?
This topic is part of a weekly series. It is meant to be a place for users to discuss their week.
If you have any plans, goals, accomplishments, or even failures, whether they be personal or work related, I'd love to hear about them. This is a place for casual discussion about your week, past, present, and future.
A list of all previous topics in this series can be found here.
So, what (or how) are you doing this week?
Building a simple "knocking in" machine for cricket bats. It has reminded me that I am out of practice welding aluminum as I haven't touched the stuff in about two years. Was back into my old groove by the end of the day yesterday, but at the start my welds looked like my Tinder profile: Ugly, but penetrates well.
Knocking in machine? Not sure what that means.
I didn't either until one of my Cricket loving Indian developers asked me about it. Cricket bats go through an oiling and hammering process before being used in the game, this (as I've read) compresses the face of the bat making it harder and less likely to crack. This is typically done with a wooden hammer and time, some companies do it with a pneumatic hammer and a carriage; I'm building him what amounts to a small power hammer.
Nice! That sounds awesome.
The norm: work and gym.
The new norm: game dev.
I won't be seeing my partner until Friday as she's working nights all week. Hopefully I'll have some good progress on Hope by then, and I'll be able to show off more than basic function updates.
This week is great for me; on Wednesday I have my last exam for my first period of school. Thursday I can finally pick up my first driving license ever. This is a big deal to me because where I grew up and where I live now, you don't really need a car so not many people I know have one. Out of my high school friends I'm the first to get it and I'm also the one of the first to get it out of my uni friends who are all significantly older than me. This also means I can now help my grandma when I visit her and drive her around to do what she needs which I'm really happy to do. Thursday I'm also making my grandma's pasta sauce which is a 4 hour process I'm preparing this ahead of date night with my girlfriend on Friday. This is where I'm stuck though, so we haven't had a proper date in a bit where we actually hung out somewhere other than my place and I was thinking of going out for a movie after dinner. Is Joker a good date night movie or is it too heavy? If so anyone have some other good suggestions? Also general opinions since her birthday is coming up soon; what would make a better present: a nice scarf or a nice blanket?
What about getting her both? I'm a big fan of "theme" gifts, where you pick a motif and build off of it. You could do a "coziness" theme and get her, say, a nice warm blanket, a beautiful soft scarf, and some luxe hot chocolate mix (or coffee, or tea, or whatever else she might like).
I'm a student so I'm balling on a budget. But I really like the cosiness theme I'll think about what I can do with that.
Joker is a heavy movie but both me and my partner enjoyed the movie. It was a nice deviation from the standard comic book movie.
As for the gift, that's tough. Does she wear a scarf at all? If it's not something she wears normally, it might be safer to go with a blanket.
Now that it's winter she's wearing scarves but the reason I thought a blanket would be good for her is because she's moving to a place of her own soon so I think it would be a good gift to make the place a bit more home like for her.
Rapidly cycling between actual work for work I'm doing, putting off my Timasomo project, and feeling bad about putting off my Timasomo project.
A friend from high school contacted me yesterday and now we're catching up. She wants to visit me after thanksgiving. God knows I could use more people to talk to right now.
Praying that Nissan is going to give me a discount on the crazy overpriced parts I need to fix my Leaf. A pump went bad and that caused the onboard charger to fail. Both of them cost far more than they have any right to be. IIRC the pump was about $850, which is crazy because it's very similar to a pump my company sells for about $150 except with a fancier bracket. The charger itself is $1400, which also appears to be entirely because it's sold as an entire package with mounting brackets and a liquid cooling block. It seems to me that modern day manufacturing techniques and business practices produce a tremendous amount of waste.
I finished to put back together an old computer (i5 2500k) and put an ad to give it for free, I've got someone come tomorrow to pick it up. I hope it's someone that will use it and not just resell it (or worse, resell parts) since I've put some work (and money) into getting it in decent shape.
