What are you doing this weekend?
This topic is part of a weekly series. It is meant to be a place for users to discuss their weekend.
If you have any plans, things you want to get done, things you have done, things you haven't done, or even if you just want to talk about how you're doing this weekend, this is a place for casual discussion about those things.
A list of all previous topics in this series can be found here.
So, what (or how) are you doing this weekend?
My coworker is a beekeeper in his spare time and I will be going over to his place for a few hours to assist in some activities.
Sunday I will be watching football and installing my new PSU in my PC hoping it fixes my issues with no monitor signal.
And I will be abstaining from caffeine and any diuretics all weekend. Will have to spend Sunday peeing in a jug to collect my urine for medical tests on Monday
That's so fun! If you don't mind me asking, do you live somewhere where it is generally warm year round and/or does he own his home? I find bees fascinating and want to learn about and potentially start beekeeping but as a renter in a northern US state I don't think it is much of an option for me. What are you going to help out with?
Congrats on finishing your finals. One of the best feelings is finally being done. I'm interested in this "tiny place". Is it just a small town in the country side or something? Or is it actually a little village somewhere?
Thanks for asking!
I'll be going to see a movie with my girlfriend tonight, maybe the new Star Wars if we can find tickets.
Tomorrow I'll be having lunch with a friend who moved out of the country for a couple years, and is back for the holidays. After that, I'm going with my girlfriend to a housewarming party that some of her friends are throwing. Sunday will be a recovery day for sure, and I'll be off from work on Monday and Tuesday; so 5 day weekend AHOY!
X-mas stuff with the fam! Also going to see the Star Wars film so I'm stoked about that. Aside from that, probably continue to study up and learn new skills as I'm on break rn and would like to roll into class rather than hitting ground.
I read this as "X-men stuff with the fam" and was so curious about what xmen-themed activities you and your family partake in on a seemingly regular enough basis to be a tradition :P
a. Trying to understand labor laws better before I start directly organizing/fighting for workers rights at my company.
b. Trying to understand how transportation science/engineering works better so I can get more involved in transit advocacy because good public infrastructure is key for environmentalism and also for helping those in need. Also its super fascinating.
c. The re-released green + blue deals released by various local and national politicians and also articles written by really smart people about what the implications/implementations of those plans might look like.
edit: well my phone just died at 30% from a degraded battery for the 3rd time this week so I guess I'm moving "research and buy a new phone" from 6 months from now to this weekend too :/
Yeah I just got home from the screening and there is a 0% chance I’m sleeping tonight. That was really good but so scary.
So I am not super worried about it but only because of the people I am giving them as gifts for. The gifts are going to my uncle who has worked in IT for 30 years and built his own arcade box and plex server, and my cousin who is interested in transitioning fields from working in TV to working in IT with very little experience. For the cousin I am giving him the raspberry pi, a tutorial guide that explains both how to do, and what you are doing, and then I am going to sit next to him and let him get hands-on experience while having me next to him to answer questions and moral support. Both I am going to put the burden of setting up blocking lists on them :P my uncle does a lot of pirating so I'm going to let him set up his own block list, and I'm going to have the cousin set up his own blocking list and DHCP setup (again, while I'm there and able to help) to let him see what happens when he does xyz and why <thing> happened.
Trying to unbrick my bricked Note 9
I'm on my own this weekend til I fly to stay with the GF's family for Christmas. Going to spend the weekend watching a soccer game (on replay since it'll be too effing early to watch local time), finishing up my new desk setup, trying another gym and deciding which to go with for the new year, and hopefully getting some reading done. I might even update my resume a bit and apply for a few jobs, though they require cover letters. Who requires cover letters in this modern day?? I thought about seeing Star Wars on my own but I figure I'll see it with the GF's family, so might as well wait and hope I don't see any spoilers.
It's my first ever Christmas not spent with my nuclear family, so it's a bit weird...
Mostly get ready for the holidays but also I'm going to see my grandma with my SO! He hasn't met her and she's getting up there in years so I wanted him to meet here before she dies, not to be morbid. The other thing is she's my only grandparent, the rest died before I was born or when I was a baby so she's the only one I've known!
Saturday? Just puttering around the house, doing odds and ends. Sunday? Lazy morning, then my usual thing helping out at the gift shop at my local Krishna Mandir.
I'm trying to practice some more machine learning stuff. I really want to improve my skills in this regard so that I can possibly put it on my resume and get an internship. Honestly though, ML is just a lot of fun. There's something about it that makes me feel like I'm doing cool shit.
Any tips for a total noob who wants to try a machine learning project on my local PC?
Yo. I'm interested in your suggestions. Maybe we can swap resources or something.
Here are some of my favorite resources:
https://python-course.eu/machine_learning.php
I really like this person's website. The English can be kind of eh sometimes, but I think that happens with a lot of ML tutorials. My favorite part of this website is that it will usually show you an implementation written by hand, and then show you how to do the name thing using a library like sklearn.
My other favorite is https://mlcourse.ai. Man, this shit is a gold mine. This is a very well done resource. Ideas are clearly communicated, good examples are given, there are lectures, assignments, notes. Thankfully it has a whole 2 lectures on just working with pandas (which I think a lot of tutorials neglect to show). This is the course that I feel has helped me the most personally so far.
Please share any recommendations for resources you have. Is there a ML/A.I. section on tildes? Maybe we ought to make one, haha.
Replied to them just now (was out on vacation not on Tildes at all...). I do have background on popular ML algorithms and hardware trends, but I just haven't tried training a model myself. What I do have is a decently powerful PC with a 1070Ti and 8700K CPU, so I'm wondering if someone knows of a good walk-through to train your first model as I'm definitely a learn by doing rather than a read theory alone kinda person.
That depends some on what your background in programming is. Have you done programming before, or are you a beginner to the entire subject?
Pretty much a beginner. I've dabbled in Python and Linux server admin topics but can't say I have a good foundation just yet. Right now I'm starting Python Crash Course from No Starch Press if that's any indication!
I highly recommend that you get a good foundation in python first. However, you can still try to learn ML at the same time. Projects are good for learning, imo.
Here's my favorite A.I. course so far
https://mlcourse.ai/
I also really like python-course.eu (it also has a standard python tutorial you might find helpful).
Goodluck on your programming journey my friend. If I can help you in any way, please let me know!
chain watched the Witcher from Netflix.
I bought all 3 witcher games but barely played them. Never read the novel either.
