I saw this exact link on r/gadgets earlier today. The top comment was that it appears only to do this if you have an iPhone on your iCloud account. Removing it re-enables the on-screen terms.
Really seems like a mountain out of a molehill story. I’ve seen this front page a few places now for a UI quirk that would affect a handful of people at most.

I highly doubt Apple is really greedily rubbing its hands together and devising a scheme to use Apple TV as a way to strong-arm people into buying iPhones. I have a strong feeling that 90+% of Apple TV buyers already own an iPhone.
This is however the kind of shit apple does do. They expect you to have an iPhone if you have an Apple Watch, they expect you to have a Mac if you have an iphone, the AirPods only work well within...

I switched to iPhone because of work and before even that, i had AirPods because they’re genuinely the best. But for example, signing into iCloud from my Linux machine is a pain in the ass. Or sharing my wifi hotspot from my iPhone to windows regularly auto disconnects, incredibly annoying.
The Apple ecosystem is ass at playing together with non-apple products and it deserves to be given shit for that, imo. So it doesn’t surprise me this particular story got some steam: it sounds like the kind of thing Apple would do, even if “accidentally”.

I think it's getting noticed now because the recent ATV price drop has made it a very compelling alternative to high-end Rokus and Fire TVs. It's still more expensive than a Roku Ultra, but the smaller price gap is easier to swallow considering the ATV's lack of ads on the home screen and much more capable hardware. The price now undercuts the Nvidia Shield by quite a bit.
I know two non-Apple users who bought Apple TV's over the holidays.
I was surprised to learn (in ya thread on this topic) that quite a few people apparently buy atv as their only apple product. I only bought one because i was already an apple boi, and would have...

I quite like the nvidia shield, but it fell prey to advertising $$$ recently. There was a bunch of drama surrounding this. I still like it, but never had to deal with ads (maybe because I'm in...

I still like it, but never had to deal with ads (maybe because I'm in Europe?). If I did, I'd probably root it somehow.

Ah, okay. If true, that's a lot less annoying and predatory. I will add a 'misleading' tag to the article. Thanks for the heads up and clarification.
