Well, been waiting for them to officially announce their VR headset for several years, and now we're finally here.

Specs appear to be (just from watching the keynote presentation):

    • M2 processor, with a dedicated "R1" sensor processor
    • 4K micro OLED screen on each eye
    • 12 tracking cameras, including depth cameras
    • 5 sensor inputs, including LiDAR
    • 3 layer pancake lenses
    • AR passthrough
    • eye tracking
    • hand tracking
    • MSRP $3499 USD

That's a hefty price tag compared to other VR headsets, but then again with those specs, that's basically a high-end Macbook Pro strapped to your face. They did a real good job trying to load it up with Day-1 content to help justify and soften that weighty price tag, especially their tie-in with Disney.

A direct partnership with Unity for app development will hopefully help jumpstart some unique immersive content creation, as most of the showcased functionality not dissimilar from strapping an iPad to your face. Can't wait to get-hands on with a devkit and see how many pixels I can push through it.

There's a lot of cool applications for this, but I'm not spending this much money to make myself a crappy little theremin.

V1 feels like a dev kit more than anything. It is priced high enough to price out most casual people but priced low enough that a business could justify the cost for a few units. It definitely feels like they are putting out a new platform and wanting to bring devs into it to populate the space with good/cool software. Or Apple isn’t actually playing 4D business chess. It’s just speculation for now. There is potential for their AR/VR platform to take off if they get some “killer apps/games” for it and are able to bring the price of the hardware way down.

People said the Quest Pro is too expensive but you can literally get 3 and a half Quests before getting this. I’m very out of the loop on VR, is the Apple Vision that much better or more advanced? Or is it just the Apple tax and the fact that people like to hate on Meta?

I find it to be much more advanced and seamless (at least from what was portrayed) than Meta's Quest headsets. I've owned most of Meta's headsets, and they're good, but Apple has the potential to turn this into the iPhone of AR and truly revolutionize computing, beating out other competitors. They have brand backing, as well as a focus on privacy and security that Meta absolutely does not. Apple is securing the vision interaction layer so that it can't be accessed by applications to reference what you're looking at, which is my fear for vision tracking. (reference Ready Player One movie's advertisement seizures clip).

However I said what the iPhone was for smartphones and not what smartphones are to the world. It’s just inherently less useful than smartphones are and, consequently, won’t be setting the world on fire in the same way. I think for now it’ll be a niche product for nerdier folks to try out and do cool things with. Maybe in 10 years we will see. It may be the future of computing. I might make another post to write down my thoughts in more detail in a couple of days when I’ve had a chance to marinate on it.

This has been in development, as far as we know, for the better part of a decade. That's a lot of R&D to amortize over a generation (or two) of hardware. Unlike Meta, Apple hasn't had multiple hardware releases in the AR/VR/XR space to iterate and recoup expenses -- this is their first.

I think we're also paying a fair amount for the fact that this is going to be defining the experience for XR headsets. Watching the demos, there are a lot of things that seem done right from the start, rather than the clunky ways that we see Meta doing interaction, and for the most part, I didn't get the sense from Apple's presentation that they expect me to eventually live inside the headset, but rather that it is an augmentation to my day to day life that I would use to improve my life instead of replacing it. Meta's goal is much more, ah, dystopian to my mind.

True, though I would have hoped they'd show people having them on but not in use. The weird "eyesight" feature seems fine for exchanging a quick word, but if you're actually conversing with someone I expect you'd want to do like a welder (or Naruto) and flip your goggles up.

Some of the promo materials for Beats headphones just have pictures of people hanging the Beats around their shoulders rather than using them to listen to something. They're as much a kind of functional jewelry as they are technology and that actually helps blend them into your daily life.

This isn't competing with Facebook's headsets. The closest analogue on the market to this thing is Microsoft's HoloLens, which starts at $3,000.

More than that actually. They didn't specify an exact resolution, but they gave a total pixel count of 23 million. Two 4k displays would still come in under 17 million.

Really? To me it felt like most of their day one content is Disney+ and stick iPhone apps.

You're correct, but that was kind of my point. It answers the question "what can I do with this thing". Now wether that answer is sufficient justification is entirely up to the individual person,...

Now wether that answer is sufficient justification is entirely up to the individual person, but it's way better than announcing your new fancy toy and the answer being "someone will build cool stuff ... eventually!".

Thread for live discussion of happenings at today's Apple Worldwide Developer Conference.

Don't expect the next iPhone announcement here (those usually happen in September). But do expect the unveiling of the newest Apple Silicon Mac Pro to see what Apple's high-spec GPU story will be. And, of course, the much rumored and speculated upon AR/VR headset is coming!

Check out Macworld's pre-show rumor roundup here

I for one am very interested in their rumored AR headset. Depending on how it looks and what it does I could see myself getting one.

Even people working on the products won’t know something like the price unless they need to.
