The thing that got me to start making rice and other things a lot more was a pressure cooker. It takes 15-20 minutes for me to make rice in my 10qt pressure cooker. I’m not going to endorse any particular brand, but I definitely recommend you look into pressure cookers if you would like to speed up cool times of rice and other dishes. (Another example, I can cook a Boston butt in 45 minutes)
It really comes down to having the right tool for the job. If you want a particular dish or types of dishes, odds are there is some sort of kitchen gadget that will help you optimize your cook times.

The first option puts the game on my radar and lets me have a little time to get excited for it. The second option is nice because of instant gratification. Nintendo likes to do the 2nd option sometimes, after a Nintendo direct they’ll just drop several games to immediately go play.
I think announcing games several years out is detrimental for the company, the game, and the audience. Honestly, most games that are announced 3-5+ years prior to release flop (imo). Turning on the hype train full steam ahead 3-5+ years before release just means that people either won’t care when it finally does release or it will never live up to the hype.
That being said, I think Nintendo sometimes does it the right way when announcing something years out. A slight hint or a tidbit of info jammed into the end of something else, then they leave it there for a while, and as it gets closer to the actual release then they start releasing more information. The amount of theory crafting I saw since the original hint of a new Breath of the Wild game was crazy. Hinting at a game like that let’s you flex timelines and features since you aren’t over promising anything.

It definitely feels like they are putting out a new platform and wanting to bring devs into it to populate the space with good/cool software. Or Apple isn’t actually playing 4D business chess. It’s just speculation for now. There is potential for their AR/VR platform to take off if they get some “killer apps/games” for it and are able to bring the price of the hardware way down.

I know I’m just looking for somewhere active that has quality discussion, nice people, and spaces for my interests. I do think it’s easy to get lost in the crowd once a place gets too big.

I don’t think it is fair for 20k of us to show up out of nowhere and demand Tildes to be different than it always has been. I also don’t think it is fair to tell the new users, “this is how things have been, this is how they always are going to be. End of discussion.”
In my humble lurker opinion, the established users having discussions (like on this post) with the new users is a great place to start. I’ve seen some good suggestions from both old and new users here that would make this a better place for everyone. Changes affect everybody though and need to be cataloged, discussed further, and voted on.
Tildes could have closed down new user registration like Lemmy is talking about doing but you guys are still bringing in new people. We’re entering your home here because ours is being uprooted. We need to be respectful of here because Tildes is allowing us in but in turn Tildes needs to give the new people some leniency as we are leaving the place we’ve been living online for the last 7-15 years. Us newbies are trying to find our footing, the eviction notice was a bit abrupt for us.
I’m personally not telling anyone to change anything. I’m just putting it out there that we should keep talking through things with the new influx of users and take a breather if we need to.

The voting here feels less like we are rewarding the person, it’s more like.. “you contributed to the conversation and had a well thought out response, doesn’t matter if I agree or disagree with you.” It’s kinda like a pat on the back or a handshake for good work. I dunno, that’s the best way I can put it into words.
Regardless, the most important thing is that people here value meaningful conversations and contributions. People actually feel like they are a part of a community. There arent nonsensical unspoken rules like on Reddit, e.g. you type out a super detailed and thoughtful comment, someone responds to your comment with “🗿”, your thoughtful comment now is at -200 and their response is +2.2k

Comment on Major Reddit communities will go dark to protest threat to third-party apps in ~tech

I’ve seen the post transcribers in the comments before but I didn’t realize that visually impaired...Reddit is making the site inaccessible to the vast majority of visually impaired users AND breaking the tools of the Transcribers of Reddit. Without even blinking, apparently. It's like it never even occurred to them that they'd be kicking all the blind off Reddit, and now that they know . . . radio silence.
This is something I didn’t know about until the posts about the blackout started rolling out. I’ve seen the post transcribers in the comments before but I didn’t realize that visually impaired users and transcribers relied so hard on 3rd party apps. It makes sense thinking back on it knowing just how bad the official app and new Reddit is.
Even if they address the API issues and keep 3rd party apps alive, imo it’s not worth staying on Reddit. Clearly their ideology has greatly shifted over the years and has only shifted further within the last few.
I know just me leaving Reddit makes no meaningful difference but if enough users, mods, and bot owners start to leave..they’ll notice. The issue I’ve been seeing pop up in Reddit threads about the API, blackout, and Reddit alternatives is that this common comment keeps popping up: “well..there really aren’t any Reddit alternatives. There is tildes (invite only) and Lemmy (some issues here) but neither of the communities are all that active.” People want to leave and they want an alternative but they don’t see anything as a valid one.
To be fair to Tildes and Lemmy, neither seems to really want to absorb tens of thousands of users. It would greatly disrupt their ecosystem and community. I’ve heard some rumblings on Lemmy about them completely disabling new user registration during June 12th-14th and on July 1st to avoid getting flooded with new user applications.
Anyways sorry for the long post, just a hodge podge of thoughts about all the recent events.

I might delete my Reddit app as well in solidarity. Reddit is making the decision for me and everyone else on July 1st anyways. I might as well go ahead and rip the bandaid off.

It would keep it in once place and would be easily ignorable by people that don’t want to see it. Again, I thought that was one of the touted benefits here..being able to easily ignore any content/topic you don’t want to see.
I personally would probably have it ignored. I have hundreds of subreddits ignored/blocked on Reddit. I also understand that people like different things and want to see different content.
I have absolutely zero interest in hearing about the latest sports, great I can block it and move on with my day. People that wanna talk sports can go on their merry way discussing it in their community.

Isn’t one of the benefits touted here how easy it is to ignore a topic? I could see having something like ~memes and ~memes.images or something to contain that content to. That would allow people that don’t want to see the content to ignore it and would allow the people that want to engage in it to have a place for it.

Another thing to consider is that with the new wave of Reddit refugees coming this way, some are bound to be developers such as myself. I’ve seen the stuff just a handful of motivated devs from Reddit can do. I’m hoping once I get some spare time, I’d like to take a look at the code base for Tildes to see if I can lend a hand anywhere.
I am worried that @Deimos is the only admin here as you should always at least have 1 or 2 contingencies. This is his website and that is his prerogative though.

I’ve done web dev professionally and lately I’ve been playing with the power of UserScripts on something like ViolentMonkey. It’s really surprising what you can do with a little bit of JS.
P.S. we really should make a mega thread on here for people’s suggestions like that. I think it would be great to get some overall community feedback, consolidate it, and make corresponding GitHub issues. Some of the ideas I’ve heard from other users would be really easy to implement but would go a long way for the user experience

Personally, I’ll have to think about what what could have value here as posts. I do have a decade of Reddit conditioning to work through :P luckily it sounds like there are other ways I can contribute even if it isn’t posts. Lending my time towards the open source repo for Tildes and commenting on existing posts sounds like they can help too.

It’s completely understandable that he has his own life that he has to maintain but the concern as a new user would be that there isn’t anybody there to take the torch if he fully moves on.
Also, as a full stack dev I’ll have to take a look at the repo to see if there is anything I can contribute or help with.
I am also a light sleeper, a couple things that have helped me are better earplugs and a white noise machine.
After trying dozens of earplugs that hurt my ears, I finally settled on Ohropax wax earplugs. Since they are wax, you roughly shape them to your ear and then they will soften and fill the crevices when you put them in.
As for the white noise machine, I didn’t get one of the electronic ones. I have one that has a physical fan inside and I can adjust the outside casing to adjust the noise it puts out. I highly recommend one of the physical ones over the electronic options.
If you are really desperate, you can buy some acoustic foam to put on your walls to cancel out some of the noise coming from outside your room.
