It was dead for me over 24 hours ago, so I left the subreddit I was moderating for 10 years and deinstalled it.
It was a big constant in my life but I think I'm done for good dealing with toxic people all day.
I'm a bit scared because everything else is changing as well right now in my life, so I imagine clinging to that stability might have advantages.

I have stopped going to reddit about two weeks ago. It was hard to stop going there in the beginning, it was a proper addiction.
I'm adjusting though and already feel less stressed. I'm missing the endless scroll, but I'm definitely not missing my inbox. I think it definitely was overdue and it pulled me down more than it lifted me up in the last years.
My addiction is specifically with news/politics on Reddit (I know, probably makes most people gag, but I care about the policies that are enacted by our government). Not sure how/where I’ll...
My addiction is specifically with news/politics on Reddit (I know, probably makes most people gag, but I care about the policies that are enacted by our government). Not sure how/where I’ll continue to stay on top of things, but for now, I concur with you that Reddit is probably not good for my mental health anyway.

I started curating my own RSS feed as a substitute. I'm from Germany but added a lot of US sources to stay on top of that. I have been way more interested in US politics than german politics the past years and try to keep track now that reddit isn't delivering it anymore. It's a fascinating shitshow that affects us all more than we would like to admit across the ocean.
I couldn’t agree more on our politics being a shitshow thing (I live in the US, fortunately or unfortunately…), and the 2016 election turned me from someone who couldn’t care less about politics...

I couldn’t agree more on our politics being a shitshow thing (I live in the US, fortunately or unfortunately…), and the 2016 election turned me from someone who couldn’t care less about politics into a politically hyper-aware and engaged voter. I’ll look into the RSS method, and I’m going to try engaging with Mastodon a bit more to see if it’s worthwhile.
That is, after I take a break from it all this weekend, of course.
Again, I think what you did was kickass, and you should know it definitely inspired me to follow suit. Cheers!
I expected to be let down whenever I got into contact with the admins. I told them months ago to never ask us for anything again. If incompetence had a name it would be reddit admins. I'm sure...

I'm sure some of them really tried, but a company can only be as competent as the boss, and Steve is dragging everyone down.
That makes sense, thank you. Either the API not completely shutting down and going in stages, or RIF pulling old data. I did see the post that some developers like Narwhal negotiated API terms...

I did see the post that some developers like Narwhal negotiated API terms with reddit so it sounds like 3rd party apps may still be around?
Still tempted to boycott reddit and hope an exodus to another site transpires, but it would be nice if a happy median between 3rd party apps and reddit were to happen.
There's at least a couple of apps that are moving to a subscription model, I know my own favorite Relay is one such. For now use remains free and the app continues to work fine, but the reddit API...

For now use remains free and the app continues to work fine, but the reddit API will still begin blocking NSFW content (so no matter what, 3rd party apps won't see that) and soon the app devs will have to start charging users to keep the lights on.

You were the mod of r/unexpected, no? Ultimate unexpected move!
Yes, I created it and somehow stayed active for 10 years.
Mad respect. After Apollo went dark, I deleted the native Reddit app from my phone. Needed a damn break from it anyway.

Did you expect the unexpected? That's the real question.
Well done on giving your free time to a community for a decade, that's a serious commitment.

Yes, that is how it's working for me and at least a few other people. By the way, there is already a thread about this! Here you go.

The app shut down like most other third party apps.
I know, but I was able to use it AFTER it shut down
