Five seconds is a bit much, but a one second delay for everything might do a lot to make the web less addictive.

Also, I use the realtwitter.com redirect which goes to a search, and searches didn't work for quite a while.

It has been the slowest loading website I know of for ages. This was already the case long before Musk took over. It never seized to amaze me how a large tech company could fuck up something so simple as showing me a short text, a problem that has been solved for decades.

I suspect the reason is that my browser throws away all cookies on exit and that this triggers all kinds of scripts and popups that a logged in user does not need to see. It must be, because even if I wanted to, the site would just be unusable.

I hate "X" with a glowing passion but I'm careful with confirming my biases too quickly, here: The comments claim it could be a bug/inefficiency from waiting for certain cookies. Still absurd, but...

I hate "X" with a glowing passion but I'm careful with confirming my biases too quickly, here: The comments claim it could be a bug/inefficiency from waiting for certain cookies. Still absurd, but maybe not malice? I don't understand it well enough to know whether this could still be intentional, though.

This part is a bit damning though:

The company formerly known as Twitter on Tuesday slowed the speed with which users could access links to the New York Times, Facebook and other news organizations and online competitors, a move that appeared targeted at companies that have drawn the ire of owner Elon Musk.

The Post’s analysis found that links to most other sites were unaffected — including those to The Washington Post, Fox News and social media services such as Mastodon and YouTube — with the shortened links being routed to their final destination in a second or less. A user first flagged the delays early Tuesday on the technology discussion forum Hacker News.

        And also:

Musk has shown little reluctance to use X’s technical tools to pursue personal grudges. In December, after Musk's takeover, Twitter banned an account known as ElonJet that tracked the flights of Musk’s private jet, banned journalists who reported on the episode and suspended the official account of Mastodon for referring to the account in a tweet.

The site also began using technical hurdles to make it more difficult for Twitter users to access Mastodon, including marking the website as “unsafe” and blocking users from adding Mastodon links to their profiles. ElonJet now posts on Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky.

I'm a big fan of benefit of the doubt, but I think at this point when it comes to Elon Musk & Twitter, Occam's Razor defaults to "yeah, it's probably malicious intent".

If you're talking about this comment, that user is alsmost certainly using curl incorrectly. See this child comment, and the OP's followup, where he's now able to reproduce the issue /with/ cookies.

Quotes that aren't really quotes are misinformation and wanting to call Musk names isn't an excuse.

I wonder if twitter tries to abuse the "3 second rule". If a site or content on a site doesn't load within 3 seconds then people tend to think something is wrong and leave for another site....
