I wouldn’t be at all surprised if things have changed since then, though.

This may have been true in the past, but it certainly isn't anymore. The compression capabilities were almost identical last time I bothered to compare them. I used winrar a decade ago and I'll never understand people still holding onto it. 7zip responds faster and has a more user friendly interface so without compression being a consideration it feels like people are avoiding 7zip just because they can't be bothered to look at something new.

This is an edge case, but WinRAR allows me to turn multiple folders into multiple separate archives. I use 7zip for everything else but this is the one thing I haven't worked out how to do with it.

I have seen people make muliple part .7z archives but I don't know if you can do zips or rars.

WinRAR has a bunch of options that make this easy, but I'm not sure if there's a way to do it in 7zip.

Oh, I don't know. I wouldn't be surpised if they did though: 7zip is quite feature packed

Whre I live, there is dominant OS Windows. I still don't understand why people don't use built-in ZIP. They can compress files directly from OS by right-clicking and when they have ZIP archive, they can work with it seamlessly (as if it was normal folder).

I don't care about byte savings of one over the other, as people tend to compress photos, videos or documents, all of them are already compressed by their respective algorithms, so you don't really get that much smaller file out of it...

But hey, why should I care. I use another OS and I have all-in-one GUI program there, I can work with whatever they send me. Yet, I will never understand why they care to install a program that does what their OS already can do.

I honestly haven't touched a standalone compression/decompression utility in even longer than a decade unless it was because some specific app I wanted/needed came in that format.

A WinRar zero-day vulnerability tracked as CVE-2023-38831 was actively exploited to install malware when clicking on harmless files in an archive, allowing the hackers to breach online cryptocurrency trading accounts.

The vulnerability has been under active exploitation since April 2023, helping distribute various malware families, including DarkMe, GuLoader, and Remcos RAT.

Users of WinRAR are urged to upgrade to the latest version, version 6.23 at the time of this writing, as soon as possible to eliminate the risk of file spoofing and other recently-disclosed attacks.

I haven’t used it myself in many, many years because 7zip is free and way better. Guess now is a good time to uninstall it.
