This was useful to me recently, as I wanted something similar to airdrop but for it to work with my ios and android and windows pc. I hope it's useful to someone else out there too.

Though these days, I just use Discord or cloud storage like ProtonDrive or Dropbox if I need to transfer things between devices quickly. Seems to work well enough, but I can also understand not wanting to give Discord (or even Dropbox) your files.

Been using this regularly for almost a year now, really handy to move files around between the range of OSs I use. Even found it useful to share long strings of text etc, a great solution imo.

Oh wow. I literally just wrote about Syncthing and now I'm finding this! Excited for this new other thing to try out.

This doesn't really seem like an airdrop alternative honestly. The nice thing about airdrop is that it allows you to share files to a nearby device. All you need to do is to be in Bluetooth range and select a file, and the protocol sets up the wireless link automatically and transfers the file.

This solution seems like it requires being on the same wifi network. To me, that just seems like sftp but with some built in multicast discovery functionality; not nearly as useful. I wish there was a true open source airdrop alternative that replicated it's features but maybe apple doesn't allow enough access to the phones hardware to developers to do something like that?

To be specific, AirDrop uses P2P wifi between participating devices for the transfer, which allows it to work in the absence of a wifi network and makes transfers as fast as the older of the two...

There is a P2P communication framework iOS apps can use, but I have no idea what making it work with other platforms looks like.

Ah everything that's old is new again. So under the hood it's really just sharing a secret for an ad-hoc wifi network and doing a file transfer.

More or less yes, though I’ve read that Apple has hardware design affordances to make it work more smoothly, such as selecting more capable wifi chipsets that can handle two networks simultaneously (e.g. a wifi network + AirDrop ad-hoc) without having to rapidly switch between the two, which prevents negative impact on performance.

I mean, I just did that between my phone and a windows computer (put computer in 'recieve file' mode, share over bluetooth on phone), no special software needed. I don't think I'd want anything...

      I don't think I'd want anything less-authenticated than that.
