So basically what I believe people predicted if this is to be believed. He's been lying the whole time about basically everything he can, and they tried to oust him for it. Turns out none of that...

He's been lying the whole time about basically everything he can, and they tried to oust him for it. Turns out none of that matters because the employees and Microsoft want a lunatic who can run up the marketing hype.

That's the synopsis, but of course we don't really know. Personally I don't trust altman or openAI an inch and I think, if true, this brings up some interesting legal questions about the structure of the company, but I expect less than nothing to occur because its going to print a lot of people a ton of money, so they'll ignore/work around it.

Between this and the Scarlett Johansson thing, it makes me less and less interested in using OpenAI products.

I got a different impression. Reading the subtext (and even the main text with the mentions of AGI), I think the real reason was the board deciding that model development was happening too fast and becoming too risky. The Roko's Basilisk and longtermism types got their vote and won.

Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of big egos involved at that level, and I'm sure some toes were stepped on during the meteoric rise of OpenAI.

I suppose you could see that, but personally I don't see us as anywhere close to AGI. Maybe 20 years? Much more likely 50+ or contingent on some major breakthrough in other areas. I could believe...

I could believe the board drinks their own koolaid on all this and thinks they're just around the corner from AGI, but seriously this is the same company that had Sam carry around a "turn off the AI" backpack as if that was actually a thing and not just an embarrassing publicity stunt. Course jokes on people like me, it sure as hell seems to have worked.
